DESCRIPTION

THE AGENCY

Zone 7 Water Agency is located in the Tri-Valley region of the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. It provides water on a wholesale basis to the cities of Pleasanton Livermore Dublin and the Dougherty Valley area of San Ramon and flood-protection services to all of eastern Alameda County. Zone 7 employs approximately 116 full-time employees and operates on an annual budget of $80.3 million dollars. The Agencys administrative offices are located in Livermore CA the easternmost city of Alameda County which is bordered by Contra Costa County to the north and San Joaquin County to the east. THE POSITION

Under general supervision to perform skilled mechanical installation maintenance and repair work on water treatment plant and field distribution system equipment and facilities; and to perform related work as required.

This class independently performs skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of pumps motors valves compressors piping systems and related water treatment and distribution equipment and facilities. This class receives direction and assignments from the Lead Plant Mechanic Zone 7 while the direct supervisor is the Facilities Maintenance and Construction Supervisor. This class is distinguished from the Lead Plant Mechanic in that the latter is responsible for coordinating and directing the work of Plant Mechanics.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate has experience with a proven track record of success that demonstrates knowledge skills and abilities in the following areas :

  • Performing skilled mechanical installation troubleshooting maintenance and repair work on a wide variety of equipment typical to a water treatment plant and distribution system.
  • Observation of safe work methods and safety precautions typical to water treatment plant materials tools and equipment.
  • Agility strength and endurance to install diagnose repair and maintain a wide variety of mechanical equipment and operate various hand power and shop tools.
  • Working in a variety of conditions including in exposure to potentially hazardous materials in confined spaces and outdoors in all weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

TO QUALIFY FOR THE COMPETITIVE ASSESSMENT PROCESS YOU MUST MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS BY FULFILLING THE REQUIREMENTS LISTED BELOW.

Experience : The equivalent of two years of full-time experience in skilled mechanical maintenance repair work in a water or wastewater treatment or industrial setting. Completion of an apprenticeship in a related field such as machinist elect rician or electronics technician may be substituted for not more than one year of the required experience.

License : Possession of a valid California Drivers license.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies :

Knowledge of :

Methods materials tools and equipment used in water treatment plant and field distribution system maintenance and repair work including plumbing electrical and related building trades work.

Shop math.

Safe work methods and safety precautions related to the work.

Metal fabrication including welding brazing and soldering.

Principles of lead supervision.

Ability to :

Install diagnose repair and maintain a wide variety of mechanical equipment used in water treatment and distribution work.

Plan and complete work assignments independently.

Operate and maintain a wide variety of hand power and shop tools and equipment used in the work.

Observe safe work methods and safety precautions related to the work.

Read and interpret plans specifications manuals and schematics.

Estimate materials tools and equipment required to perform assignments efficiently.

Follow written and oral instructions.

Direct the work of others as assigned.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.

Other Requirements :

Must be willing to work in exposure to potentially hazardous materials in confined spaces and outdoors in all weather conditions. Must possess strength sufficient to perform work assignments. Must be willing to respond to emergencies in off-hours as required.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS :

  • A review of applicants application to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
  • A review of the supplemental questionnaire to determine the best qualified. Those candidates considered the best qualified will move on to the final step in the examination process. This is a pass / fail exam component.
  • An oral examination which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates final examination score. The oral examination may contain situational exercises.
  • Candidates must attain a qualifying rating on each portion of this recruitment.
