Senior Building Inspector

To check plans and specifications for new and existing buildings. To perform on-site inspections to determine compliance with-zoning ordinances and building codes; and adherence to original plans and specifications; and to enforce safety regulations. To investigate and respond to possible building code and housing violations.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general supervision from the Building Official; may receive indirect supervision from the Senior Building Inspector.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :

• Make field inspections of building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical installations for residential, commercial, and multi-family construction to ensure compliance with applicable codes.
• Check plans for original construction or alterations or remodeling to ensure compliance with pertinent codes and accepted engineering practices; issue acceptance or approval of such plans and specifications.
• Review plans and applications for building permits.
• Confer with architects engineers, builders and the general public in the field and office; explain building code requirements and restrictions.
• Maintain inspections or permit file; submit inspection reports as required.
• Investigate violations and complaints.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is : Experience : Two years of experience in Building inspection or three years of journey level experience in construction work and the building trades. Education : Completion of the twelfth grade. License or Certificate : Possession of an ICC B1 and E1 certificate is required. Contain a valid California State Driver's license.

After the evaluation of minimum qualifications, examination parts for this recruitment may include, but are not limited to the following : written exam, performance exam, oral appraisal interview, physical ability test, oral presentation, project assignment, etc. If moved forward, candidates will be notified via email of the type of examination required for this recruitment.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Requires frequent use of personal computer, including word processing, database and spreadsheet programs, telephone, copy and fax machines, and all tools and equipment necessary to successfully perform the essential and important duties of the position.

Employees work in an office environment or in any building or structure within the service area. Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to inclement weather, exposure to noise, dust, grease fumes, gases and potentially hazardous chemicals. Employees may interact with upset staff and / or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures. Employees may be required to respond to calls on evenings, weekends and holidays.
