Senior Software Engineer - Azure Storage / Azure Files

Azure Files team is looking for a talented and highly motivated Senior Software Engineer - Azure Storage / Azure Files to design and develop the next generation of the Azure file storage stack. We are building Microsoft’s cloud storage solution – Azure Storage – a massively scalable, highly distributed, ubiquitously accessible system that serves the entire world. Azure Files is the foundational file system and sharing service built in Azure Storage, supporting industry‑standard SMB / CIFS, NFS and REST protocols, fully compatible with on‑premises file servers, scalable to exabytes of storage, and delivering world‑class reliability, performance and security.

As a Senior Software Engineer in the Azure Files Storage team, you will develop features at the core storage and protocol layers of the service, including architectural changes that significantly increase scalability and performance of the file system. You will explore distributed system design, file protocols (NFS, SMB) and solve the performance and scale requirements of demanding workloads used by the most impactful companies and services.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, maintain and operate a highly resilient, multi‑protocol file service with high scale.
• Implement next‑generation enhancements in the core Azure File Storage service, including scale‑out of the namespace and highly optimized data and metadata operations.
• Explore and grow your skills with distributed system design, file and network protocols, and other career‑building technologies.
• Collaborate with a diverse group of engineers at all levels through sharing and learning.
• Work directly with customers that power the world, responding to and mitigating live site issues.
• Apply proficient troubleshooting and debugging skills to find practical solutions to complex problems.
• Coordinate with teammates, creating clarity from ambiguous situations.
• Embody Microsoft’s culture and values.

Qualifications

Software Engineering IC4 – base pay range across the U.S. : $119,800 – $234,700 per year. In the San Francisco Bay area : $158,400 – $258,000 per year.
