Job description

Position details :

  • This job posting will be open until filled and will hire two individuals.
  • This is a seasonal, full-time (40 hours / week) position is anticipated to start April 13, 2026 and end on October 30, 2026.
  • This position is based out of Karlstad, Minnesota and Southern Pines, NC (rural areas) on a rotational basis. Travel between the two locations is compensated.
  • Shared housing and basic utilities are provided by TNC at no cost to the employee upon signing and agreeing to housing terms, and the employee must live in the provided housing to meet the needs and nature of the position and to maximize the effectiveness of the crew.
  • Transportation from The Nature Conservancy Office to various preserves will be provided by The Nature Conservancy in each state.
  • Hourly rate range : $18.00 - 19.05 / hour dependent on experience.
  • This position is benefits eligible.

What We Can Achieve Together :

As our Multiple Location Burn Crew Member, you will split your time between the Tallgrass Aspen Parklands of Northwestern Minnesota (May - October / November) and the Sandhills of North Carolina (November / December - April). You will be a part of the seasonal burn crews in each location and may assist with wildland fire operations in other parts of the region with federal, state, or private partners. You will also engage in preserve management activities outside of prescribed fire timeframes.

Additional duties include, but are not limited to : assisting with clearing and mowing firebreaks, prescribed burning, applying herbicide, boundary posting, repairing and organizing burn equipment, fence construction and removal, tree and brush cutting, constructing parking areas, maintaining vehicles and equipment, meeting with local landowners, identifying management needs for preserves, assisting with field trips, leading volunteers, and other land management activities as necessary.

As part of the Burn Crew Member's ongoing professional development, you will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain / grow professional fire certification credentials. In addition, you will have the opportunity to network, build, and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works.

Some overtime is expected, and as part of the crew, you may be asked to travel to other areas of the state or out-of-state to assist other TNC programs or partners on prescribed or wildland fires. This may include overnight stays for multiple days for burn opportunities. You will work outdoors in variable weather conditions, in remote locations, at times on difficult and uneven terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

What You'll Bring :

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be qualified as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2.   • Ability to pass US Forest Service work capacity test at arduous level (3 mile walk with 45 lb. pack in 45 minutes)
  • Must achieve physical fitness standards as determined by the local Prescribed Fire Manager and the TNC Fire Management Manual.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Lawn mower, chainsaw, UTV, ATV or OHV, two-way radio, or similar equipment).
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required (e.g., First Aid, CPR).
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Must have valid driver's license.
  • Desired Qualifications

  • Multi-lingual skills and multicultural or cross-cultural experience are appreciated.
  • 1 - 2 years' experience in land management or related field.
  • Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems.
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues.
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometime under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
  • Ability to function productively as a member or leader of a work team.
  • This position may also require that you are able to cross the US-Canada border without incident.
  • PC and / or mobile device familiarity, including database knowledge or understanding.
  • This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC's Auto Safety Program . Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned / leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

    Salary Information :

    The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $18.00 - 19.05 / hour. This range only applies to candidates whose country of employment is the USA. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's location, qualifications, specific skills, and experience. Please note countries outside the USA would have a different pay range in the local currency based on the local labor market, and not tied to USA pay or ranges. Your geographic location will be confirmed during the recruitment.
