Description :
The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care.
This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients.
Nursing and supervisory techniques are applied in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates / residents.
The RN performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of their education and licensure.
Appropriate nursing skills are applied in the area and treatment of inmates / residents.
Attendance at sick call with the physician is required to see inmates / residents.
The RN will prepare a list of inmates / residents to be examined and prepare the examining room and equipment.
Operating pill call, dispensing medication, and documenting as required by policies and procedures is also part of the role.
The RN is responsible for calling Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, as well as for other emergencies.
Examination and assessment of new inmates / residents with illnesses or injuries is mandatory, along with referring them to the emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facilities as required by their condition.
Emergency procedures are performed as needed, and the Licensed Independent Provider is notified for treatment orders.
Assistance in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel is also required.
The RN monitors inmate / resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate.
Guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed vocational / practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff are essential responsibilities.
Maintaining a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies is necessary.
Utilization of established policies and procedures in decision-making while using sound independent judgment is required.
Regular evaluation of medical services is conducted to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of those services.
Maintaining absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records is crucial.
Assistance with the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented is expected.
Close monitoring of all potential catastrophic illnesses is a responsibility of the RN.
Auditing pharmacy use for adherence to formulary is required.
Compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, particularly those covering controlled substances, is mandatory.
Observing and recording inmate / resident behavior is part of the daily tasks.
Inspecting the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband and securely storing or safely disposing of supplies and equipment is crucial.
Health counseling and health education may be required individually or in groups.
Assistance with preparing and maintaining a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, or operational records, reports, and logs, while processing all reports and documents in a timely manner, is expected.
Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, and legal documents is necessary.
Reviewing, processing, and responding to lawsuits while attending court hearings when necessary is a part of the role.
Facilitating the accreditation of the medical program by providing approved, appropriate medical services may be required.
Preparing and disseminating safety and accident reports according to policies and procedures, along with taking appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies, is essential.
