Primary Purpose :
Provide health-related support and personal care assistance to students with significant disabilities in a Life Skills classroom setting. Work under the supervision of a special education teacher and school nurse to ensure students' health, safety, comfort, and participation in educational activities.
Responsibilities and Duties :
Student Care and Support :
- Assist students with daily living activities, including feeding, toileting, dressing, grooming, positioning, and mobility.
- Provide medical or health-related support as directed by the school nurse (e.g., catheterization, seizure management, medication assistance, g-tube feeding, or other prescribed procedures within scope of certification).
- Maintain clean, safe, and supportive environments for students at all times.
- Monitor and document students' health status and report any changes or concerns to the teacher and / or school nurse.
Classroom Support :
Support the classroom teacher in implementing individualized education programs (IEPs).Assist students in participating in academic, vocational, and community-based instructional activities.Promote independence, social interaction, and self-care skills among students.Assist with instructional materials, classroom organization, and data collection as directed.Collaboration and Communication :
Work closely with teachers, related service providers, and the campus nurse to support student needs.Maintain confidentiality of student records and health information.Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development as required.Qualifications :
Education / Certification :
High school diploma or GED required.Current Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) license in the State of Texas (or applicable state certification).CPR and First Aid certification required (or ability to obtain).Special Knowledge / Skills :
Knowledge of basic nursing and health procedures.Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.Patience, compassion, and ability to work effectively with students with disabilities.Strong communication and teamwork skills.Experience :
Experience working with children, particularly students with special needs, preferred.Prior experience in a school, healthcare, or pediatric setting is desirable.Working Conditions :
Work inside classroom and school settings; may assist during community outings.Frequent standing, walking, lifting, and positioning of students.Exposure to bodily fluids and potential behavioral challenges.Supportive, team-oriented environment focused on student success and safety.
