Description

The new Clemson University Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position for the Clemson Small Animal Community Clinic (Community Clinic). The anticipated start date for this appointment will be approximately July 1, 2026.

The Community Clinic, Small Animal faculty (General Practitioner, GP) will be primarily responsible for teaching fourth year DVM students fundamental clinical skills in preventive care, primary care, surgery, and dentistry. The caseload will be focused on the underserved in the community, but also supplemented with faculty, staff, and students as needed. A licensed social worker will work in the Community Clinic to provide services for our low-income clients, and client communication, compassion fatigue and grief counseling training.

Overview of Clemson and the CVM

Located in South Carolina's beautiful and fast-growing Upstate, Clemson University is the land-grant university of South Carolina and ranks among the country's top 50 national public universities in the U.S. News & World Report. The CVM is currently seeking accreditation by the American Veterinary Medicine Association-Council on Education to offer the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree to approximately 80 students per cohort starting in 2026 (pending approval). The CVM plans to utilize a partial distributive model of clinical training for students. Its brand-new state of the art campus will reside in Pendleton, SC, near the T. Ed Garrison Arena, will house research and teaching labs, and utilize both ambulatory services as well as teaching sites at the Clemson University Equine Center, Lamaster Dairy Cattle Center, and other locations for education in the field.

Overview of the Position

Reporting to the Department Chair and working closely with the Associate Vice President for Strategic Planning and Initiatives and Head of Veterinary Services, the Community Clinic GP Faculty will :

Will train 4th year veterinary students on a clinical rotation with a focus on preventive care, primary care, surgery, and dentistry through partnerships with underserved communities in South Carolina and faculty, staff, and students.

Will supervise students working in community-based clinics conducted in collaboration with external partners.

Participate in pre-clinical teaching and training as needed, time permitting.

Additionally, the faculty member must have the ability to :

Work independently and collaboratively as part of a team, possess exemplary verbal and written communication skills, with exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.

Prioritize and manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and function independently with limited supervision and guidance.

Work in partnership with faculty and staff across multiple disciplines and functions across the college and university.

Participate in research and scholarship initiatives designed to improve educational and professional outcomes.

Demonstrate a commitment to the core values of Clemson University and specifically to community, engagement, belonging and accessibility ( CEBA ).

Qualifications

  • DVM
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in veterinary medicine in the areas of preventative health, primary care, surgical, and dentistry.

Preferred qualifications include :

  • Experience teaching and / or supervising DVM students in surgery, dentistry and / or clinical skills settings.
  • Advanced degree (MS) or certificate credential in education; advanced degree or certificate credential in public health, shelter medicine, or population medicine
  • Board certification or residency training in a veterinary specialty recognized by the ABVS (ACVIM, ABVP, etc.).
  • Experience with low-stress patient handling methodology.
  • Evidence of leadership through committee service work, professional organization work, or coordination of a unit or training program.
