Overview
The Newcomb Department of Music in the School of Liberal Arts at Tulane University is seeking an assistant professor of music (tenure-track) with expertise in the history and practice of Black American music. We wish to hire a candidate with commitment to contributing to the body of research on music associated with Black American culture, including, but not limited to, Blues, Gospel, Jazz, R 'n’ B, Soul, Funk and / or Hip-Hop, as well as the music of the broader African diaspora. The position has a start date of July 1, 2026. The successful candidate will be a scholar or a scholar-artist with an active research / creative production / performance portfolio.
Responsibilities
- Teach a 2 / 2 teaching load of courses for music majors as well as general population students (non-musicians). Courses may include “Jazz History,” “New Orleans Music,” and other courses in Black American music history, theory and / or performance, depending on the candidate’s experience and expertise.
- Mentor and advise undergraduate and graduate (Master’s) students.
- Engage in research / creative output and contribute to the university’s area of excellence in Black American music.
- Foster strong connections with musical communities and scenes in New Orleans.
Qualifications
Expertise in the history and practice of Black American music (including Blues, Gospel, Jazz, R n’ B, Soul, Funk and / or Hip-Hop) and the music of the broader African diaspora.Experience and demonstrated success in college or university teaching; promising research and / or creative output.Ability to contribute to this area of excellence within the university and collaborate with related departments (e.g., Africana Studies).Evidence of ongoing research / creative production and readiness for tenure-track requirements.Context
