ELIGIBILITY FOR EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT
WORK WEEK SCHEDULE
Monday-Friday (occasional evening and weekend requirements for on-call emergencies on a rotating basis)
POSITION PURPOSE :
Provides professional learning to staff in the maintenance of good health and disease prevention and identifies health disorders among staff and students.
Provides staff education on health related issues for staff, students, and parents. Administers immunizations and performs reviews of student immunization records for schools and Central Services departments.
Screens health appraisals of students and prepares health reports for submission to the Board of Education and the Wake County Health Department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs)
- Extensive knowledge of medical disorders and treatments;
- Extensive knowledge of child growth and development;
- Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point; Google Apps;
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services;
- Ability to comply with Wake County Public School Systems' (WCPSS) confidentiality policies and procedures;
- Ability to work independently in a face paced environment;
- Ability to use advanced assessment skills in autonomous situations to make nursing judgments regarding complex student needs;
- Ability to pay attention to detail and have a high level of accuracy;
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form using a variety of communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information, collaborative efforts, and feedback;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school system staff, external agencies, attorneys, parents, and the public.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited college or university;
- Four years of experience in school health, pediatrics, public health, or related nursing field.
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- State of North Carolina Registered Nursing license;
- National Board Certification of School Nurses (NBCSN); certification by the American Nurses Association (ANA) or the Association of School Nurses (NASA);
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification;
- Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license according to the State of North Carolina requirements.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :
- Four years of experience in school health;
- Experience using the North Carolina Immunization Registry (NCIR).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Provides consultation and training for school employees who assists students with medical plans of care ordered by a physician.
- Provides training and / or written information to staff concerning student's written health plans.
- Performs reviews of student immunization records for schools and Central Services departments, as needed; administers immunizations.
- Provides support to students, staff and parents with regards to medical plans of care.
- Assists school staff with understanding of immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data.
- Provides staff development on health-related issues and medically necessary treatments.
- Prepares health reports for the director, Board of Education, and the Wake County Health Department.
- Screens health appraisals of students.
- Monitors program outcomes and progress towards mutually identified program goals to assess and evaluate the nursing practice in a school setting.
- Attends workshops and other educational programs to increase nursing knowledge and skills.
- Develops, tests, and assists with the implementation of EASI (Electronic Access to Student Information, electronic records).
- Participates in the on-call rotation to assist with weekend emergencies calls about Bloodborne Pathogens and Communicable Diseases.
- Provides follow-up evaluations on students, as required; recommends corrective action where problems are identified.
- Performs other related duties, as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This job operates in a professional office environment and has a noise level of mostly low to moderate. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, scanners, and copiers.
The position, at times, must be able to come into direct contact with school system staff, students, parents, staff members of external agencies, and the community.
Work is considered light physical work, requiring the exertion of up to 30 pounds of force. The work frequently requires driving automotive equipment.
