The Acoustical Data Scientist will lead analytical efforts to interpret active-acoustic and supporting datasets collected by NOAA and external partners. This includes developing and applying machine learning and AI models within Google Cloud Workspace, organizing data workflows, and producing high-level deliverables such as peer-reviewed manuscripts and stakeholder presentations. The position also supports interagency collaborations and may include sea-going operations for data collection and validation at sea.
RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Lead active-acoustic data analysis, development and organizational efforts on data collected by the NEFSC and industry partners with the use of advanced analytical methods, such as artificial intelligence and machine learning
- Develop and apply analyses in Fisheries Google Cloud Workspace (i.e., in the cloud).
- Communicate analyses and results at scientific conferences and meetings with academic, governmental, and industry partners through presentations, posters, or other digital media.
- While not required, opportunities to perform tasks on sea-going vessels may be available. If feasible and warranted :
Participate on research cruises when acoustic data management analysis is required at sea.
- Serve as a member of the scientific party standing watch for up to 12 hours per day when acoustic data management is required at sea.
- Assist with general shipboard sampling activities, organization, and clean-up.
REQUIREMENTS :
- PhD in science or computer science or 5+ years equivalent work experience
- Advanced experience in fisheries acoustics or related field
- Expertise in AI / ML methodologies and data pipeline development
- Strong R / Python programming background
- Proficient in Oracle database systems
- Experience in Google Cloud environments
- Proficiency with Echoview software
- If sea-going tasks are feasible and warranted :
Valid driver's license with the ability to operate Federal motor vehicles
- PPD TB test clearance within the past 12 months
- OMAO medical clearance for sea duty on NOAA vessels
- Be able to work at sea for 5-17 consecutive days
