Departmental Overview

The Department of Neuroscience, which was launched in July 2024, will advance the understanding of brain, mind, and behavior through research, education and training. Our faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and postdoctoral researchers study how the brain functions in health and disease, how it generates behavior and thought, and how it computes. We investigate the nervous system on levels ranging from molecules and cells, to neural circuits and systems, to behavior and cognition, to neural computation. We also develop neurotechnology and explore the impacts of neuroscience on society.

Position Summary

Reporting to the lab Principal Investigator Dr. Liberty Hamilton, the SRA interacts with students, postdoctoral fellows and other individuals who are part of the lab. The Hamilton Lab studies how speech and language develop in the brain, working with children, adolescents, and adults who are having surgery for epilepsy. The SRA will be responsible for recruiting subjects to research protocols, running behavioral tasks with patient participants with students, postdocs, and PI, and performing basic data preprocessing, organization, and analysis. The SRA will be responsible for liaising with other collaborating sites to organize electrophysiology, neuroimaging, behavioral, and other research data. The SRA will be responsible for some neuroimaging analysis using CT and MRI scan data. Calls participants to assess their interest in participating in other research protocols. Responsible for a limited amount of data analysis, maintenance of laboratory databases, maintenance of lab website and protocols. Will directly work with pediatric patients in the hospital, graduate students, postdocs, undergraduate researchers, and the PI, so must have excellent team and interpersonal skills.

This successful candidate will serve as a key staff member responsible for recruiting and testing of research participants, preprocessing data, and maintaining lab data organization.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with collaborating sites at Dell Children's Medical Center, Texas Children's Hospital, and UCSF to transfer and organize incoming patient data using SSH, SFTP, or other secure file transfer protocols.
  • Responsible for recruiting subjects to research protocols, running behavioral tasks with patient participants with students, postdocs, and PI.
  • Assess whether patients are eligible for research studies, assist during patient data collection, collects data independently.
  • Perform neuroimaging analysis using python tools and Freesurfer neuroimaging software to localize electrodes from CT and MRI scans in patients with epilepsy.
  • Perform data analysis in python, MATLAB, and freesurfer, and maintain databases and organization.
  • Maintain lab website and patient facing website and materials.

Required Qualifications

  • Familiarity with standard office software.
  • Familiarity with multiple operating systems (Linux, Unix, Mac OS, Windows).
  • Organized, detail-oriented, good record-keeping.
  • Good interpersonal skills and communication ability, including with children.
  • Some programming experience in Matlab, Python or similar software.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with human subjects research.
  • Experience working with patients in a hospital setting.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Some experience working with databases.
  • Experience in working with MRI images.
  • Experience in working with electrophysiology data (could include EEG, intracranial EEG, or other types of electrophysiology data).
  • Experience in editing and developing websites.

    Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

    The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $60,245.54 (Step 1) - $72,003.03 (Step 10).

  • This is a full-time (40 hours / week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
