Their primary responsibility is to conduct electrocardiograms (EKGs), which record the electrical activity of the heart.​ Common Duties of an EKG Technician : Preparing Patients for EKG Tests : Explain procedures, answer questions, and ensure patient comfort. Conducting EKG Tests : Attach electrodes to the patient's body and operate the EKG machine to record heart activity. Monitoring Vital Signs : Measure and document blood pressure and other vital signs during procedures. ​ Assisting with Stress Tests : Support the administration of exercise or pharmacological stress tests under supervision. Maintaining Equipment : Ensure EKG machines are functioning properly and report any issues. ​ Documenting Test Results : Record findings accurately and communicate them to the healthcare team. ​ Certification and Licensure Requirements : In the United States, there are generally no federal or state mandates requiring EKG technicians to be certified or licensed.
