  • Purpose & Description

The Journeyman is a member of the lake crew who is responsible for managing a small, 1–3-person team to install or repair boat docks and / or accessories. The installs or repairs could include repairing or installing decking, steel and aluminum frames, metal roofing, boat lifts, or floats as well as moving docks in and out of the water. The work is accomplished by using a modified pontoon boat to travel across lakes, rivers, etc. to access the boat dock. Quality dock service is completed while growing in skill and professionalism, in a positive team environment. The Journeyman Captain is semi-advanced in skill and is ultimately responsible for the safety and success of assigned duties, vehicle, water vessel, equipment, and technicians assigned, as well as always representing a professional image. Pre-requisite to be a Journeyman Boat Captain : Successful completion of the Apprentice Boat Captain Training. Journeyman Boat Captain reports to the assigned Service Project Coordinator (SPC). The SPC reports to the Repair Sales Department.

Skills & knowledge

  • Must know how to solve team and company problems within your area.
  • Proficient with use of specialized equipment, systems, hand tools, including power tools and techniques that is appropriate for the area(s) of specialization.
  • Advanced knowledge in 1 and basic knowledge in all other Service areas below (See Service Area Skill Summary) :

    • Welding and Fabrication

  • Decking and Carpentry
  • Boat Lift Installation
  • Dock Moving and Transport
  • Extensive project and time management.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, drawings, specs, and work orders.
  • Practical, on the job experience in boat and water navigation.
  • Experience in supervision and / or management of at least one direct report.
  • Able to keep sensitive customer, employee, company information confidential.
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental hazards.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations in construction, especially working on water and boat safety.
  • Ability to learn and adhere to safety training, OSHA training, PPE requirements.

    • Tasks & Activities

  • Understand your job and what is expected of you. Understand your SPC’s job and what is expected of them.
  • Build a relationship with your team. Serve your team by investing in their success. Build trust with your team.
  • Continuous contact and updates to your assigned SPC.
  • Lead all Techs on your boat to always act appropriately first by example, then by correction.
  • Assist in ongoing training of Techs on your boat. Do not just tell them how, show them how.
  • Report any accidents, mishaps, or misbehaviors to your assigned SPC, and if necessary to SM.
  • Directly communicate with customers when necessary and report any issues to your SPC and / or SM immediately.
  • Complete and turn in daily work orders, and all paperwork on time.
  • Educate yourself, explain and re-direct your team on all company policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Oversee and complete punch list. Double check the completion of your punch list.
  • Monitor work environment for hazardous or safety issues and mitigate or report, as necessary, this includes wearing all Protective Equipment as required by law and Martin Docks Safety guidelines.
  • Report daily any water vessel, vehicle or equipment maintenance or repair needed to your SPC and Fleet Dept.
  • Pre plan your jobs for the day. Make sure you have all the materials for each work order the day before, and you fully understand them. If it looks odd, or incomplete, it probably is. Ask as many questions as needed.
  • Give your team productive tasks to do while traveling to and from each job and must complete all tasks given by your SPC in the time frame instructed.
  • Schedule daily 30-minute lunch and at least two 15-minute breaks and adhere to the allotted time given.
  • Make sure your boat has all the tools, safety equipment, drinking water, first aid kit, etc. every single day.
  • Conduct tool inventory inspections as required.
  • At the end of the day, prepare your boat for the next day. Make sure all materials needed for the next day are secured and all equipment, boat and vehicle are completely fueled. It is your responsibility to make sure you are ready to go the next morning without any delays.
  • Protect and take care of the customers’ property.
  • Travel to out-of-town jobs when scheduled.
  • Saturday work required if necessary and scheduled.

  • Must maintain a calm, respectful manner, and attitude always.
  • Must never use disrespectful, foul, profane language. Must always use modest and decent language and gestures.
  • In stressful situations, will maintain a calm demeanor and guide Tech’s in the direction you need them to go without causing undo stress, and / or reflect to the customer you have the situation under control.
  • Must report all breakdowns and repair issues to the Fleet Department immediately. The Fleet department is the only department authorized to repair, maintain, or modify company equipment, water vessel, trailer, or automobile.

    • Physical Requirements / Environment & work setting

  • Requires standing, sitting, bending, and repetitive motion.
  • Requires hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools, or controls.
  • Requires lifting and moving a minimum of 35 pounds.
  • Requires contact and / or face-to-face discussions.
  • Includes exposure to sounds and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Exposure to chemicals, hazardous equipment, minor burns, cuts, bites, or stings.
  • Requires working indoors and outdoors in an uncontrolled environment, on a water vessel and on a body of water.
  • Requires travel by road vehicle, and water vessel.
  • Requires good balance while working on a boat dock as it is moving and / or rocking.
  • Requires standing, walking, carrying equipment or materials or working on uneven terrain, steep embankments, wooded areas, shoreline sand or steps.
  • Requires being comfortable with working on the water, being in the water, and traveling across deep-water levels on a water vessel or boat dock.

    • Education & Experience

  • Requires High School Diploma or equivalent education or experience.
  • Requires at least 1 (one) year of on-the-job training or 2 (two) years of prior experience.
  • Requires completion of Safety and First Aid Training.
