Job description

Job Position in Community Recreation Division

The purpose of this position is to perform duties commonly found in a variety of work situations and incidental to many different occupations in Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR), such as grounds maintenance, warehouses, facilities, and rental operations. This involves heavy labor, the use of hand and power tools, operating motor vehicles, towed, and large equipment.

Responsibilities include :

  • Operating POS system and loading / unloading materials
  • Operating a variety of power equipment to include mowers, clippers, posthole diggers, blowers, weed eaters, power washers, and banding equipment
  • Using hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, bars, saws, axes, loppers, wrenches, brushes, and brooms to maintain and clean facilities and grounds
  • Moving and organizing equipment, supplies, furniture, and materials by hand or by mechanical means
  • Excavating, backfilling or spreading sand, dirt or fill materials to improve recreation spaces
  • Ensuring grounds and facilities are maintained and clean
  • Clearing small trees, limbs, tree debris, and bushes using handsaw, clippers or loppers
  • Shoveling, sweeping or raking snow, sand or dirt from sidewalks, playgrounds, volleyball courts, beach and recreational parking lots
  • Cleaning and waxing vehicles
  • Maintaining an inventory of hand and power tools, large equipment and inflatable bounce equipment and ensuring they are in good working order
  • Making adjustments to equipment to ensure proper settings, connections, and mechanical soundness
  • Making minor repairs, painting, and performing carpentry work
  • Assisting the mechanic with maintaining and cleaning rental equipment
  • Delivering, setting up, inspecting and tearing down inflatable bounce equipment
  • Assisting in preparing excess property for disposal
  • Determining and selecting the most appropriate type of equipment to accomplish each phase of the work in the most productive and cost-effective manner
  • Assisting in issuing and receiving rental equipment from customers

Works under direct supervision of the Community Recreation Manager or Manager as designated by the Installation Program Director. Supervisor sets general overall program and management objectives and defines the work to be accomplished. Supervisor does not give detailed instructions or provide continual supervision. Incumbent works and carries out assignments independently after getting initial oral or written instructions and completes routine assignments in accordance with general policy, past practice, or simple drawings or specifications. Completed work is reviewed by the supervisor for overall accomplishment, quality, care of equipment, and fulfillment of project requirements.

Requirements include :

  • One year of specialized experience directly related to the duties described above
  • Knowledge of safe and efficient operating techniques of various large equipment and power tools
  • Ability to operate and control riding mowers on slopes
  • Ability to operate equipment around buildings, walls, trees, fence lines, banks and hillsides, trenches, curbs, rocks and other visible obstacles
  • Ability to operate various controls and levers to maneuver equipment and lift / lower, adjust, engage / disengage components or attached devices
  • Knowledge and skill using hand tools and other equipment such as shovels, rakes, hammers, bars, saws, axes, loppers, wrenches, brushes, brooms, ladders, banding equipment, and pallet jacks
  • Ability to complete assignments involving several tasks by following detailed processes
  • Ability to follow general instructions or read simple drawings to perform tasks requiring significant manual skill
  • You must be a US Citizen. Males must be registered or exempt from Selective Service. Selectee must be determined suitable for federal employment. Selectee may be required to successfully complete a probationary period. Selectee is required to participate in the direct deposit pay program. Social Security Card is required. Satisfactorily complete an employment verification (E-VERIFY) check. A favorable background is a requirement of this position. Failure to obtain and maintain a favorable background may result in the withdrawal of the position offer or removal.
