The Commercial Underwriter I is r esponsible for communicating with the agency force on Commercial Line matters; underwriting commercial new, renewals and endorsement business; re-underwriting existing commercial line business; performing various duties relating to commercial lines; and developing sound agency and industry relations to achieve growth objectives within an assigned territory and agency plant.
Essential Duties :
- Reviews incoming correspondence, applications, and binders, determining if underwriting guidelines and criteria are met
 - Approves risks
 - Communicates with agents regarding all aspects of commercial lines including :
 
New business and renewals
Rates and ratingEndorsements and changesInspections, re-underwriting of business and recommendationsApproval of businessProcesses, rates and underwrites incoming applications, endorsements and re-underwritten businessAssists the Underwriting Supervisor as needed, including :Suggests changes to procedures, manuals and guidelines
Provides information for reports, meeting, and other company activitiesAssists in commercial lines trainingsPresents to groups on commercial underwriting as requiredWorks to achieve growth objectives through the following :Engages in ongoing development and analysis of the agency plant and relevant action plans
Recommends appropriate promotional programs and productsMonitors and reinforces the agency's commitment to goalsContributes to the quality of the agency plant by training personnel on new and existing commercial products, the company's automated programs, rating methodology and proceduresContributes to the profitability of the agency plant through the following :Evaluates individual agency results and recommends necessary actions
Participates in applicable agency reviewsImplements review actionsProvides management with necessary action plansContributes to the underwriting / marketing efforts by obtaining and analyzing competitive products and programsMotivates agency force as necessary to maximize production of profitable businessReviews and comments on agency appointments and annually reviews existing agentsAssists in the development and testing of new products as assigned by the Underwriting ManagerPerforms other related duties as assigned or directedBasic Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree and / or a minimum of two (2) years' equivalent business experience preferred.AINS designation or other educational program related to commercial lines underwriting as approved by the commercial underwriting manager is preferred but not requiredProficient reading, writing, and grammar skillsProficient mathematics skillsProficient interpersonal relations and communication skillsMust demonstrate good working knowledge of commercial line underwriting procedures and insurance form informationDemonstrated ability to analyze informationDemonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervisionSufficient typing and computer skillsMust be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.
