DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, the Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for providing care to transplant patients in the Liver Transplant Program. Provides clinical assistance and support in treating and managing outpatients and acts as key member of the multidisciplinary liver transplant team. Evaluates patients in the pre-transplant and post-transplant phases, including history and physical, patient preparation, procedures and management. Solves complex clinical problems and communicates directly with the attending physician, fellows and residents.

The Physician Assistant (PA) will follow standardized advanced practice procedure guidelines to provide follow through with the care plan. Assess and provide medical care as appropriate for patient care populations based on competence, professional expertise, and knowledge. The Physician Assistant is expected to practice consistent with Professional Standards of Practice. Collaborative judgment with an off-site physician is expected to be exercised within the context of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to patient care. Under general supervision, the PA performs operational level duties as described in the UCSD Performance Policy.

The major emphasis of this position is direct patient care delivery. Assignments at this level primarily encompass management of patients who present chronic and / or episodic health problems. Assignments at this level may include responsibility for occasional community teaching programs, participation in program planning and development of patient education information. May perform other related duties as assigned.

Depending on the experience of the selected candidate, this position will be hired at the Physician Assistant or Senior Physician Assistant level.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

BLS / CPR certification at time of hire with commitment to get BART within six months of hire date.

Minimum two (2) years of full-time experience as a licensed Physician Assistant (PA). Experience must include Solid Organ Transplant or Hepatology, which may be met through clinical rotation or practicum. If an insufficiently qualified applicant pool, the department may be willing to consider a new graduate.

Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

Ability to maintain detailed medical information in an organized and easily retrievable manner.

Proven ability to manage comprehensive patient care with a strong emphasis on clinical decision-making, care coordination, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures and protocols for patient care management.

Ability to perform initial history, and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

Demonstration of a high level of professionalism and excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to function well independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Demonstrated professionalism, emotional resilience, and sound clinical judgment in high-acuity and fast-paced environments.

Ability to understand the medical as well as psycho-social needs of a patient population with liver disease.

Comfort in a group teaching setting and willingness to do community outreach.

Excellent assessment skills and ability to make clinically sound decisions in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment.

Ability to perform patient history, physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to prioritize well.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Liver Transplant experience. Demonstrated knowledge of liver disease and transplantation, including knowledge of the pathology of the patient population, expected outcomes, and normal and abnormal lab results.

Ambulatory care experience.

Experience with Epic Ambulatory and Epic Phoenix

Experience leading or actively participating in Quality Improvement (QI) and / or Performance Improvement (PI) initiatives aimed at advancing clinical outcomes, operational workflows, or patient experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs.

Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain them during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical PA work experience must be within the last two years.

Must have a minimum of one (1) year of PA experience to be considered at the Sr. Physician Assistant level.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range : $160,922 - $211,974 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent : $77.07 - $101.52

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
