Job Title : Permit And License Technician
The Permit and License Technician is responsible for the review, processing, and issuance of building permits, licenses, and business tax receipts. Employees in this classification work closely with contractors and owner / builders in the areas of contractor registrations, certificates of occupancy, and inspection requests.
Essential functions include compiling and reviewing supporting documentation and reference data for permitting and approval purposes; responding to inquiries and concerns regarding building, construction, license, and permit functions and requirements; processing approved business tax and permit applications in compliance with established regulatory standards; providing prompt, courteous service and assistance as the front-line contact for customers; performing accounting tasks related to the receipt, processing, and recording of transaction fees and charges; conducting research and follow-up to complete missing information or to correct inaccurate documentation; maintaining and updating records associated with contractor files, inspection logs, issued permits, outstanding fees, violations, etc.; processing requests for Certificates of Occupancy; coordinating inspections with other Village departments and outside agencies; and issuing Certificates of Occupancy accordingly. The role also requires reading and interpreting plan reviews, zoning and plat maps, and Village codes and ordinances, establishing and maintaining professional working relationships with customers, fellow employees, and other Village departments, and reporting to work as directed during state of emergency conditions.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, two (2) years of successful work experience in the customer service field, preferably in a permit technician capacity, active ICC Permit Technician Certification or successful attainment of ICC Permit Technician Certification within one (1) year of hire date, demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment, knowledge of accepted business and administrative practices, familiarity with permitting and licensing operations, policies, and procedures, evidence of strong customer service skills, and knowledge of and ability to utilize current technology and business software applications appropriate to the assigned responsibilities.
Physical requirements include the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work and may also include some lifting, carrying, pushing, and / or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Environmental requirements include work performed in normal office conditions with infrequent exposure to adverse environmental factors.
