Job Summary

The MRI Implant Safety Specialist role is focused on the comprehensive management of MR safety for patients with implants and foreign bodies. This includes developing, managing, and implementing implant-specific MR safety protocols across all clinical MR locations within the Department of Radiology. The incumbent will update policies and procedures in line with ACR and FDA guidance, maintain MR safety databases, and support annual safety training for all relevant staff. Collaboration with clinical and non-clinical teams, as well as external vendors, is a key part of this role. The MRI Implant Safety Specialist ensures compliance with MR safety regulations and develops clear processes for assessing and preparing patients with implants for MR procedures. This role requires travel between sites, regular audits, and direct interaction with clinical staff to ensure the highest safety standards.

The incumbent should be an experienced professional with knowledge in MR safety, implant assessment, and data management. They must independently handle projects of diverse scope and demonstrate the ability to solve complex problems using analytical skills and clinical knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certification as MRI Technologist (ARRT / ARMRIT)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 5 years of MRI experience
  • Proficiency in MR physics and implant-specific safety standards
  • Strong data analysis and reporting skills for MR implant safety metrics
  • Familiar with detailed safety procedures, including MR zone management and emergency response protocols
  • Ability to develop and implement safety protocols
  • Expertise in regulatory compliance and accreditation requirements
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills with multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities for complex MR cases
  • Familiarity with EMR systems and implant screening tools
  • Ability to conduct MR safety training and education sessions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) Certification at time of hire or within 6 months of hire
  • Previous experience working as an MRSO in a hospital setting.
  • Advanced training or certification in implant safety procedures
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering staff education related to MR safety and implant clearance.
  • Proficiency in designing training programs focused on risk mitigation and regulatory compliance for MR environments.

    UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.     Must be able to work variable hours, alternate shifts, and overtime to provide coverage as needed for sick leave, staffing shortages, etc. Must be able to provide evening, weekend, and holiday coverage per departmental staffing guidelines.
