Utilities Maintenance Worker
This is manual work involving limited skills in various maintenance and construction tasks throughout the City. Employee performs work of heavy manual nature, which does not require a high degree of manipulative skill; however, as work experience is gained, employees may be assigned to somewhat more difficult tasks of a semiskilled nature. Work is closely supervised, and employee receives specific work instructions at the beginning of each new job; however, constant supervision is not necessary for routine and repetitive tasks, which can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned. Work frequently includes the performance of heavy lifting and other strenuous tasks. Work is performed under the immediate direction of the supervisor and / or other delegated authority.
Essential job functions include :
- Loads and unloads dirt, shell, sand, cement, timbers, reinforcing steel, and other construction materials.
- Fills pavement cracks with asphalt; rakes asphalt paving mix in repair of streets; patches pot holes with hot asphalt; places lime rock.
- Assists in digging grade and setting forms for concrete work; wheels dirt, sand, concrete, and other materials; and tamps and levels concrete. Performs sidewalk grinds.
- Assists in repairing leaks in mains; digs and backfills ditches; assists in caulking joints; cleans catch basins; installs drain pipes; and unstops clogged sewers.
- Drives automotive vehicles and construction equipment to and from job sites as needed.
- Assists with preventive field maintenance consisting of oiling and lubricating equipment.
- Installs temporary traffic control for safety.
- Sweeps walks; removes refuse and paper from grounds and buildings.
- Digs and cleans ditches and trenches; levels dirt and asphalt; drives stakes; and breaks up rocks and concrete.
- Installs and maintains street traffic signage.
- Loads and unloads heavy materials and tools from trucks and vans; moves or aids in moving heavy boxes or equipment and large, bulky objects; and cleans / washes vehicles.
- Receives job training in semi-skilled and skilled trades.
- Follows safe work practices to eliminate & mitigate hazardous conditions & behaviors at the work environment.
- Promotes a culture of safety within the organization.
- Performs related work as required.
Requirements include :
Graduation from an accredited high school / vocational school or G.E.D. equivalency diploma.Proof of the highest level of completed education must be submitted as an attachment with the application.Six (6) months of satisfactory performance and permanent status as a Maintenance Worker I or Field Maintenance Worker with the City of Sunrise.OR one (1) year of fulltime work experience in Building Maintenance or Public Works (Grounds, Streets, and / or Stormwater) maintenance and / or repair functions.Must possess a Florida Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class B or higher with an acceptable driving record.Ability to operate truck with hydraulic lift, small tractors, skid steers, small rollers, power tools and equipment.Ability to perform heavy manual labor.Must pass pre-employment and random drug testing as required and monitored by DOT 49 C.F.R. Part 382.Physical requirements include :
Tasks are regularly performed outdoors with potential exposure to varying temperatures, inclement weather, and / or other adverse conditions.The ability to perceive and differentiate visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone and / or other City-issued technology devices.Physical capability to effectively use and operate City assigned vehicles, golf carts, and manual or power tools.Sufficient physical strength and agility to do heavy manual labor, often under adverse weather conditions.Ability to climb, balance, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, push and / or pull, twist and make repetitive hand movements.Ability to walk, stand and sit for prolonged periods of time.Ability to load, carry, lift, push and / or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include :
Knowledge of power tools and equipment used in building and grounds maintenance.Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to laboring work.Ability to operate trucks, small rollers, small tractors, and similar automotive equipment.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.Skilled in the use of pole shears, power pole saws, chain saws, low volume sprayers, and other standard tools and equipment of the work.Sufficient physical strength, agility, and freedom from disabling defects to permit climbing and working from considerable heights.Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform heavy manual labor, and occasionally under adverse weather conditions.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, the general public and City officials.
