Circulation Assistant

Walnut Park Library has an opening for a full-time Circulation Assistant. We are a busy location in the St. Louis Public Library system serving several diverse neighborhoods. Our ideal candidate is someone who is comfortable working with the public and is enthusiastic, patient, and committed to providing excellent customer service.

In this role you will:

• Assist customers with library cards and the check-out and return of materials.
• Assist in preparation, delivery, and receipt of Library materials; receive payment from customers.
• Provide reference assistance for patrons via face-to-face and telephone interactions, including locating items in the catalog or on shelf, as well as looking up information.
• Provide assistance to customers with Library equipment.
• Restock and shelve materials, including shelf-reading, as necessary.
• Greet customers upon entering the Library facility.
• Assist in developing and removing displays.
• Assist in opening and closing the location.

You will need to be:

• Friendly, patient, and able to multitask while assisting customers.
• Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work with competing tasks and priorities.
• Capable of effectively providing information and responding to questions from customers and staff.
• Flexible, positive, and willing to work with staff and colleagues to successfully overcome challenges.

You will need to have:

• High school diploma or general education degree (GED) with previous customer service experience.
• Strong communication and organization skills.
• Computer skills and knowledge of Windows and GSuite.

Hours for this position are: Monday from 11:35 to 08:05; Tuesday through Thursday from 09:35 to 06:05; and alternating Fridays and Saturdays from 08:35 to 05:05.

About Walnut Park:

• Originally opened in 1917 as a mini-branch located on 5553 Robin Ave. It relocated to 5778 West Florissant Avenue in 1928, before moving to its present location at 5760 West Florissant Avenue in 1972. A complete renovation was performed in 2000.
• Collection size approximation is 12,500 items (includes juvenile, adult, and audio-visual materials)
• Auditorium with audiovisual connectivity

About the neighborhood:

The Walnut Park Branch is located in the historic Walnut Park East neighborhood and near the boundary line of Walnut Park West. Not far from the Library are two notable burial grounds, Cavalry and Bellefontaine Cemetery. Several prominent persons are buried in these cemeteries, including Dred Scott, General William T. Sherman, Adolphus Busch, Thomas Hart Benton, Rush Limbaugh and William S. Burroughs. The surrounding neighborhood is still very much alive. The West Florissant Business Association actively promotes local entrepreneurs and small business start-ups. The Library remains a prominent anchor in the surrounding community.
