Business Tax Refund Specialist
The Michigan Department of Treasury is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Departmental Specialist to serve as the Business Tax Refund (BTR) Specialist within the Business Tax Technical (BTT) Unit. This unit is a critical component of the Tax Policy Bureau and is recognized for its deep expertise in business taxation. The BTT Unit provides essential support to the Business Taxes Division, Direct and Indirect Tax Divisions, the Attorney General's Office, and other key internal and external stakeholders.
As the BTR Specialist, you will act as the Treasury's subject matter expert on complex business tax refund issues across all supported tax types. You will be responsible for administering and processing the most intricate refund requests, including but not limited to :
This role requires advanced analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to interpret and apply tax laws, policies, and procedures. You will also serve as a key liaison between Treasury and external stakeholders such as business representatives, tax practitioners, and other government agencies.
Required Education and Experience : Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major. Four years of professional experience, including two years equivalent to the experienced (P11) level or one year equivalent to the advanced (12) level. Note : A position is considered professional if the job requires a bachelor's degree. Qualifying 'professional experience' is only taken into consideration post-bachelor's degree.

Hybrid remote work. This position is eligible to work remotely on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, and must work on-site Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For remote work performance, this position requires a designated, secure, and appropriate workspace with reliable internet access (minimum 25 Mbps download, 5 Mbps upload). Remote work arrangements are subject to management approval and may be adjusted or discontinued at any time.
E-Verify. The Michigan Department of Treasury participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S. Interviews may occur virtually using Microsoft Teams.
