The mission of the Study Abroad Center (SAC) is to foster a culture at UCI in which study abroad is expected and achievable for all students.

Housed within the Division of Undergraduate Education, SAC assists students in participating in programs abroad that offer unique academic opportunities, international learning and personal development while making progress toward their UCI degree. Graduates who have studied abroad become future leaders - in public, private and non-profit sectors - with a more nuanced understanding of other countries and cultures as well as greater self-awareness and self-confidence. We aim to ensure that our students' study abroad experiences help them affect positive change, both locally and globally.

Your Role on the Team

Under the direction of the Study Abroad Center Director, the Study Abroad Advisor role uses skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional to advise and support students (inbound and / or outbound) through all phases of their international experience, from program development to re-entry programming for the full range of study abroad opportunities available at UCI. Programs available include, but are not limited to, the University of California's Education Abroad Programs (UCEAP), UCI Partner Exchange Programs, Faculty Led Programs, and other UC and External programs involving work / internship / volunteering / research opportunities abroad. Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of issues related to studying abroad as a UC student. Supports and advises faculty and administration on the creation of new programs and global opportunities for students. Advises on a variety of student issues related to the development and operations of a study abroad academic integration strategy and advocates for academic integration with existing UC curriculum. Works with academic units' management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.g., the financial aid office, international center, undergraduate division, or student success units. Leads special events. Serves as supervisor of student staff. May administer funds for student study abroad programs, when available. In-person position with flexibility. Note : We are hiring for two positions under this recruitment.

What It Takes to be Successful

Required :

• Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written, to work effectively across the organization at all levels. Ability to resolve conflicts with tact and diplomacy.
• Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
• Detail oriented with the ability to apply critical thinking skills to analyze problems and apply effective solutions. Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion and demonstrate independence in identifying complex problems and proposing innovative solutions.
• Experience in records management, database collection, analysis, and word processing software
• Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and deadlines. Excellent multitasking and follow-through skills; able to work under pressure managing multiple projects with attention to details.
• Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
• Excellent customer service and student relations skills.
• Ability to exemplify excellence through diversity by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment that maximizes the success and inclusion of our UCI community. Ability to work and interact with diverse populations.
• Experience designing and implementing outreach activities and training.
• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
• 3-5 years of relevant professional experience in higher education, advising a diverse university student population
