Common diagnoses include respiratory distress. The unit has 43 beds in 32 rooms. Normal nurse to patient ratios are 3 : 1, with higher acuity ratios at 2 : 1 or 1 : 1. Lower acuity assignments may allow for ratios of 4 : 1. Charting is completed using Cerner. The role may involve special procedures such as arterial sticks, maintenance of cooling blankets, chest tube management, and peripheral intravenous access.
