Surgeon is responsible for providing medical, surgical treatment, and follow up for patients treated with severe and life-threatening traumatic injuries, critical illness or emergency general surgery conditions. Surgeon will work with providers in other specialties, as needed, to stabilize and treat patients. Surgeon assesses and manages patients following established standards and practices.

Work schedule : Varied shift work in the hospital and in clinics that equates to 156 shifts per year for full time.

Shifts are comprised of day shifts and night shifts in the hospital or a day shift in the clinic. Currently, a hospital day shift is 7am-7pm and a hospital night shift is 6pm-7am providing an hour of overlap. Clinic shift hours vary with patient volume demands but do not exceed 8 am to 8 pm.

Back-up shifts, either day or night in the hospital follow the same hours but are only reimbursed and counted toward the annual shift requirement if the surgeon is called in and works more than 6 hours. A surge shift occurs when the surgeon is called in and works less than six hours, which does not count toward the annual shift requirement.

Call expectation : Primary night call and back up call is evenly distributed and typically includes 2-4 primary night shifts per month.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES : (May perform additional duties of similar complexity within SCHS as required or assigned)

Clinical Duties :

  • Examines, diagnoses, and surgically treats critically injured patients and patients with emergency general surgery conditions.
  • May perform emergency procedures including endotracheal tube intubation, tube thoracostomy, resuscitative thoracotomy, pericardiocentesis, ultrasonographic evaluation, peritoneal lavage, and massive transfusion.
  • Performs patient examinations, obtains and records pertinent medical history, subjective, and objective findings.
  • Orders and interprets appropriate laboratory, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures. Interprets and integrates data to determine diagnosis, and therapeutic plan.
  • Administers and prescribes medications in compliance with state law and practice guidelines.
  • Orders and performs appropriate medical and surgical procedures in accordance with State law and practice guidelines.
  • Instructs patient and family regarding medications and treatments.
  • Educates patients regarding health, illness and injury prevention, and healing. Recommends community resources to meet patient and family needs.
  • Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, documenting clearly and concisely.
  • Triages patient telephone calls, providing consultation as needed.
  • Communicates effectively with colleagues, patients, physicians, and administration. Maintains quality of clinical practice by selecting appropriate avenues for professional growth. Maintains CME requirements and certifications per trauma center and State requirements.
  • Participates in and supports quality and performance improvement activities; identifies areas and functions where patients, staff, and physicians need information.
  • Medical performance issues will be directed to the medical director of the service.
  • May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.

Non-Clinical Responsibilities :

  • Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, supporting the health system's corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violations of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all health system's investigations and proceedings.
  • Keeps all licenses and appropriate certifications current and unrestricted to maintain privileges at a St. Charles Health System hospital sufficient to permit performance of job duties.
  • Increases understanding and collaboration throughout the medical community.
  • Maintains compliance with hospital's Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules, and Regulations, as required by SCHS Board of Directors.
  • Administrative Expectations :

  • Participates in SCMG provider meetings and assists in policy formation for SCMG and provider practice.
  • Participates in administrative activities of the trauma service as required by Oregon statutes.
  • Participates in creating a healing environment that supports all aspects of the care environment and the wholeness of each individual, patient and caregiver.
  • Participates in creating intentional relationships, and puts a high level of focus on attitudes and behaviors that enhance the care experience.
  • Provides a therapeutic presence in service to others by purposefully responding to the needs of patients / customers in a caring way. This includes introducing oneself and stating your purpose, asking the patient their preferred name, spending time with the patient to determine their care goals, active listening, and using skillful communications (appropriate touch, eye contact, etc.).
  • Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests.
  • Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality. Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, supporting the health system's corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violations of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all health system's investigations and proceedings.
  • EDUCATION

    Required :

  • Graduation from an accredited medical school.
  • Successful completion of an accredited residency program in General Surgery.
  • Successful completion of additional educational programs necessary to enable Physician to acquire and maintain privileges to perform the range of services contemplated. This includes board eligibility / certification in the specialty being practiced.
  • Complete annual fire / safety, etc. education in-services as required.
  • Attend mandatory educational offerings as described in SCHS policies / procedures and / or as required by other regulatory bodies.
  • Complete annual CME as required to maintain license and appropriate Board certification. Complete in a timely manner assigned Computer Based Learning modules.
  • Preferred :

  • Fellowship training and board certification in Surgical Critical Care.
  • LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION / REGISTRATION

    Required :

  • Current license as MD / DO.
  • Board certified or eligible in General Surgery. Those applicants who are not board certified at the time of application but who have completed their residency or fellowship training are required to become board certified within seven years of residency or fellowship training.
  • Unrestricted Federal DEA number.
  • Unrestricted ability to participate in Medicare / Medicaid, or other federal or state governmental health care programs.
  • Valid driver's license and the ability to meet SCHS driving requirements. Current BLS certification.
  • Current ACLS and ATLS certification.
  • If provider will practice sedation, moderate or deep, ACLS certification is also required.
  • Additional certifications may be required based on privileges granted to provider by Medical Staff Services at SCHS Inpatient locations.
  • Preferred :

  • Current unrestricted Oregon Medical License.
  • EXPERIENCE

    Required :

  • Experience using EMR (Electronic Medical Records) software.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with a diverse population and professionally represent St. Charles Health System.
  • Experience working in a team environment and proven ability to collaborate, manage facilitation and consensus building among health care professionals and agencies to achieve expected results.
  • Preferred :

  • Epic EMR software experience
  • PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

  • Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.
  • GENERAL

  • Must have excellent communication skills and ability to interact with a diverse population and professionally represent SCHS.
  • Strong team working and collaborative skills. Ability to multi-task and work independently. Attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication and customer service skills, particularly in dealing with stressful personal interactions.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Electronic Medical Record systems. Intermediate in Microsoft applications (Word, Excel).
