Job description

KMM, a leading provider logistics and network services to the U.S. communications industry, is currently seeking an experienced Optical Field Technician responsible for being the project technical lead in Testing and Turn Up and analyze troubles Ciena, Nokia, ALU, Cisco and Fujitsu optical equipment, circuits and fiber optic networks. Responsible for furnishing written communications to the customer. Perform the installation, terminating, labeling, testing, and troubleshooting of voice, data, and fiber optic premise distribution systems.

Education : Bachelors or Associates Degree

Certifications : Varies depending on customer and requirements.

Work Experience : One to Five years of experience in optical technician field support of Ciena, Nokia, ALU, Cisco and Fujitsu network elements is required. Completion of Ciena, Nokia, ALU, Cisco or Fujitsu Optical Field Engineer course is desired; equivalent field experience with Ciena products may be considered. Experience with other optical network offerings may be considered.

Reports To : Project Manager

Physical and / or Special Requirements : Lift up to 50 lbs, stand sit or crouch for prolonged periods

Working Conditions : Outdoor enclosures or inside plant. Depends on the project.

Responsibilities : (Described as essential functions of the job) :

Responsible for commission, test and turn-up of customer equipment all types of equiment including : Norte / Cienal, Alcatel-Lucent, DSC, Adtran, Infinera, Tellabs, , Fijitsu, and Cisco.

Experience with fiber characterization

Extensive travel, up to 100% may be required Flexibility

Perform System Line Up And Test procedures on optical transmission equipment Review and follow MOPS for customer equipment

Troubleshoot faults on in-service and / or out-of-service equipment

Test and Turn-up DACS (Digital Access Cross-connect Systems)

Test and Turn-up Ethernet equipment and circuits.

Run tests with the NOC on equipment alarms that require IP Addresses.

Maintain a test equipment inventory and calibration due dates.

Be proficient using the follow test equipment :

OTDR, Fiber Optic Transmission Measuring Set, Visual Light Laser,(may be required to use a test set for more complex testing of fiber optical)

Bit Error Rate Test Sets to test metallic DS1 and DS3 Circuits Such as a OC48, OC192, OC768, JDSU 5812, JDSU 6000 and JDS UNIPHASE T-BERD 8000 with SONET Platform.

Ethernet Test Sets such as the Transport Module for the T-BERD 8000 Platform.

Special Skills :

Communicate effectively, written and verbal in order to resolve complex system problems Able to comprehend and follow work instructions, apply basic math, and use handheld measurement devices.

Ability to characterize fiber spans, analyze test results and implement corrections Able to coach others with trouble-shooting procedures

Strong foundational understanding of UPSR / BLSR, SONET, point-to-point, Optical Mesh Networking, single mode and multi-mode fiber, GPON, DWDM and connector types

Self-sufficient, able to troubleshoot optical networking problems, journeyman technician

Exhibit a Road-Warrior mentality, as needed to meet customer requirements

Team player with well-developed interpersonal skills who is comfortable in a cross-functional, multi-cultural environment with a focus on team development and prioritization.
