Test Engineer

Upwing Energy is developing and commercializing first-of-their-kind Subsurface Compressor Systems (SCS) for natural gas extraction. Our development efforts combine exciting engineering challenges in turbomachinery; rotor dynamics; high-speed and high-power electric motors; power electronics; industrial automation; aerodynamics; structural, thermal and fluid flow simulations; mechanical design and design-for-manufacturability.

General Purpose of Job :

Upwind Energy is searching for an experienced test engineer with expertise in developing and performing tests for electromechanical devices and / or turbomachinery for our Katy, TX facility. We are looking for a professional who enjoys unique challenges, varied assignments, and has the initiative to take on complex testing projects and drive them to completion. The test engineer is a member of a cross-functional team that will develop and operate complex electronic and electromechanical test beds for early engineering development of novel gas compressor systems and sub-components. This role is for a hands-on person, who pays attention to detail and has excellent communication skills.

The test engineer will help design, build and operate these complex test beds in our Katy TX office; provide test program management through the development lifecycle; work with the engineering team to design test setups and procedures to meet objectives as well as interpret the resulting data; and keep a constant eye on improving operations and methods.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities :

• Gathers test requirements to ensure testing will validate design
• Designs test stands and fixtures incorporating mechanical, fluid and electrical components
• Sets up and operates data acquisition equipment to measure and record sensor data (pressure transducers, flow meters, thermocouples, accelerometers etc.)
• Writes high quality test plans, procedures and reports
• Generates P&IDs and electrical schematics
• Interfaces with technicians to support test stands during build and operation
• Manages and ensures the safe operation of the test areas of our Katy TX office
• Helps develop and follow guidelines for the accurate and efficient measurement and recording of test data
• Troubleshoots prototype compressors and test setups
• Coordinates groups to solve system problems
• Disseminates test results
• Provides feedback to design engineers for validation or improvement considerations in the design
• Maintains and improves testing facility as required
• Designs and builds testing infrastructure with future-proofing in mind
• Searches for and selects ancillary equipment based on requirements
• Collaborates with the team throughout the development of the product, including setting up, troubleshooting and testing
• Increases sophistication, efficiency and effectiveness of LabVIEW-based User Interface
• Works closely with cross-functional teams and various customers to understand the product and ensure it meets / exceeds customer performance and durability requirements
• Ensure test processes and activities align with the ISO 9001 Quality Management System, contributing to the continuous improvement of testing procedures and overall product quality.
• Monitor and ensure the calibration and proper maintenance of testing equipment, adhering to ISO 9001 standards for equipment control and ensuring accuracy in testing.

This position will be in the shop environment most of the time in Katy TX. Personal protective equipment should be worn in designated shop floor areas. Travel to our Cerritos, CA office will be required for training (>

4 weeks to gain working experience with equipment and processes), updates in operational processes and meetings.
