Blood Bank Coordinator
Follows laboratory policies and procedures to perform high and moderate complexity testing. Performs pre-analytical and post-analytical laboratory support functions. Demonstrates clear communication with team members to optimize laboratory operations
What You Will Do
Performs all Essential Functions of a Medical Laboratory Technician IILeads departmental projectsTrains students and new team members, and is a resource for other technical team membersAssesses competency of team members as assignedMonitors compliance to accreditation and regulatory checklist items.Serves as an escalation for issues that arise with team members, and internal and external clientsEnsures quality control and quality assurance program appropriate for the testing performed and that parameters for acceptable levels of analytical performance are maintained throughout the entire testing process through pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phasesContributes to the policy and procedure developmentAdditional Responsibilities
Ability to keep organized, work in a fast-paced environment and multi-taskDisplays initiative to perform job dutiesInitiates and maintains positive relationships with patients, customers, co-workers.Effective written and verbal communication skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel applicationsAbility to work effectively within role independently and with other team members and excellent organizational and time management skillsKnowledge of standard laboratory policies and procedures, safety practices, and laboratory equipment and instrumentation. Knowledge of regulatory standards and a good understanding of laboratory operationsInitiates, solves problems, and troubleshoots issues independently.Works in multiple laboratory sections / disciplines independently (3 or more).Displays ability to effectively train students and new team membersGood understanding of laboratory operations and is an expert in one laboratory section / discipline and familiarity with Laboratory Information SystemsMaintains knowledge of relevant checklists through active participation in inspection process and understands test validation methods and participates in the processEffectively addresses issues when escalated by team membersPerforms other duties as assigned.Complies with all policies and standards.For specific duties and responsibilities, refer to documentation provided by the department during orientation.Must abide by all requirements to safely and securely maintain Protected Health Information (PHI) for our patients. Annual training, the UH Code of Conduct and UH policies and procedures are in place to address appropriate use of PHI in the workplace.Qualifications
Education
Associate's Degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology (Required)Work Experience
3+ years experience in a highly complex laboratory setting within defined clinical disciplines i.e. Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Molecular, Microbiology, Histology, Cytology, etc. (Required)Blood Bank experience preferredLicenses and Certifications
Medical Lab Technician (MLT-ASCP) MLT (ASCP) certification or equivalent required (Required Upon Hire)Physical Demands
