The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Structure Construction (SC), is recruiting for a Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor). The position is located in San Diego County.
This position reports directly to a Supervising Bridge Engineer in Division of Engineering Services, Structure Construction. The incumbent is responsible for and manages a staff of engineering employees on multiple structure projects. The Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor) may be required to act as the Structure Representative on major projects while managing field staff on smaller structure projects. This position currently covers District 11 including San Diego and Imperial Counties for SC.
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Bridge Engineer exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and / or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions. Working Conditions
Position located in San Diego, San Diego County.
While at their of operation, incumbent will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial lighting. In the office setting, must be able to walk, stand or sit for prolonged periods of time. As a statewide organization, DES adjusts to periods of fluctuation workload to successfully deliver projects. Incumbent will be required to travel and perform fieldwork. May be exposed to loud noises, dust, dirt, uneven surfaces, extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, odor chemicals, extreme weather conditions and sunlight while out in the field. May be required to work in a wide range of sometimes extreme weather conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold as low as 15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet or snow. Incumbent may be required to work on urban roadways at night under artificial light. Work consists of five. eight-hour days. Travel, overtime and / or night work may be required. May work around bulky / heavy materials and equipment used in t the vicinity of inspection areas. May also be exposed to the motoring public. Extensive travel may be required; therefore, incumbent must be able to travel using a car or commercial transportation. Regular and punctual attendance is required. DES employees may be given temporary assignments on DES projects throughout the State as workload demands.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
New toState candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification orminimum of alternate range when applicable.

1. Describe your knowledge and experience in bridge construction methods and engineering, bridge rehabilitation and maintenance techniques, structural analysis, project development process, procedures and philosophies.
2. Knowledge of Structure Construction organization, policies, and performance measures.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of supervisory and management skills and responsibilities (e.g. work balancing, developing budgets, employee safety, employee development, employee conduct and discipline).
4. Demonstrate your ability to analyze facts, data, and situations using problem solving techniques.
5. Demonstrate your ability to negotiate and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing (e.g. writing technical reports, group presentations, and public forums)
6. Demonstrate your ability to maintain strong working relationships and establish and maintain partnerships within Districts and with external partners.
