Emergency Department Manager
Reports To : Director, Hospital Operations FLSA Status : Exempt
JOB SUMMARY
The Department Manager works with doctors and staff to provide a high level of care and treatment for patients. The Department Manager directs and manages the technician (nurse) team in support of the organization’s vision, mission, goals, and policies. The Department Manager is responsible for working with the Shift Leads and Hospital Leadership team to deliver results across client and patient care, staffing, learning and growth, internal business processes, and financials. The incumbent must have the flexibility to work various schedules in a 24 / 7 cycle that enables oversight and direction for staff on all shifts.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Incumbent must have the skills, ability, and judgment to perform the following essential job duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation :
- Demonstrate solid veterinary clinical skills and be a role model for the team
- Participate in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring department staff at the discretion of the Hospital Director
- Collaborate with doctors and hospital leadership to ensure efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance with all approved policies and procedures. Assist with developing and implementing procedures for the hospital.
- Manage department staff by conducting regularly scheduled one-on-one meetings, providing timely positive recognition and performance coaching and feedback.
Evaluate individual and team performance by inspecting what is expected. Address performance issues affecting patient care, client satisfaction, and team dynamics; initiate progressive discipline, when appropriate under the supervision and in coordination with the Hospital Director
Identify root causes and provide preventative actions for all problems identified; e.g., overtime, inefficienciesPromote positive communication and information flow within the facility by modeling effective communication skills both internally and externally, and promote and foster a positive team environmentCreate and maintain department work schedules in a timely manner using available technologies, and manage appropriate staffing levels to ensure optimum patient care, maximum efficiency, and workflowFacilitate direct or indirect training to department staff. Provide routine assessment of skill level and knowledgeFollow safety practices to avoid workplace injuries of self and othersOversight in all onboarding activities of newly hired staff to ensure timely and effective new hire integration in coordination with Training & Development Manager. Completes all required reporting related to tracking of onboarding process within prescribed timeframes for direct reports in coordination with Training & Development Manager.Through collaboration with leadership team, assist with execution of post-onboarding training program for all staff. Ensures that the targeted knowledge is effectively transferred during and post-training. Completes all required reporting related to tracking of training activities within prescribed timeframesParticipates as a member of various operational-oriented councils as deemed appropriatePerforms other duties as assignedESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required for the incumbent :
RVT license preferredPrevious veterinary leadership experience in ER, Urgent Care or Specialty setting preferredThree years’ experience in a clinical veterinary setting; or four years’ related work experience, including experience training team membersBachelors degree preferredLeadership, management, staff development, problem solving, interpersonal, presentation and organizational skillsStrong conceptual, analytical, research, problem solving and presentation skills, and abilities, consistently demonstrate accuracy, and thoroughness in work productThe ability to deliver results, develop shift leads and staff, and the desire to develop and progress in their own knowledge and skillsStrong working knowledge of a Hospital Information System desiredMaintain the California Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP); must obtain within 60-days of hire or transfer into this role; (this requirement is waived if incumbent holds a valid CA-RVT license)Ability to maintain : 1) reliable and safe transportation to other facilities 2) valid California driver’s license, 3) proper vehicle registration, and 4) California’s minimum automobile insurance coverage requirementPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
