Course Description :
STU 49 1 : Special Topics : Decorative Art : Quilting as Contemporary Art Practice
3 credits
This course invites students to explore the expressive and conceptual possibilities of quilting and sewn forms as contemporary art practice. Through a combination of demonstrations, readings, and studio experimentation, students will learn hand and machine sewing, applique, and piecing techniques while creating both functional and sculptural textile works. Quilts will serve as the central focus of the course, with additional explorations into related textile forms including banners, soft sculptures, and wearable pieces.
Students of all skill levels are welcome-no prior sewing experience required. Together, we'll consider how quilting traditions can function as acts of storytelling, protest, portraiture, and play. The class will reference artists such as Rosie Lee Tompkins, the Gee's Bend quilters, Faith Ringgold, Chris Edwards, and Claes Oldenburg, alongside film and text selections that connect fiber practices to broader cultural and political conversations.
The classroom will function as a sewing circle-an active, social space that invites improvisation, collaboration, and personal expression. Each student will create one quilt from start to finish, and the class will culminate in a group exhibition that showcases each student's exploration of fabric as both surface and meaning.
