About the University

Established in 1965, Metropolitan State University (MSU Denver) was founded to serve students who were underrepresented in higher education whose life paths and experiences did not fit the traditional mold. Sixty years later, the University continues to serve over 16,000 of Colorado's extraordinary and diverse students, providing them with the foundation on which to build their unique aspirations. As the third largest public institution of higher education in Colorado, MSU Denver is a model university for today's college students.

Proud of its federal designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution that also offers graduate programs (gHSI) and the only Seal of Excelencia certified institution in Colorado, the University serves the most diverse undergraduate student population in the state, as well as the most first-generation students. Through affordable, flexible, and holistic education, MSU Denver helps students build essential skills grounded in a multicultural and global perspective that lead to undergraduate and graduate degrees, and career and life success.

About the Department of Economics

The Department of Economics at MSU Denver provides students with a valuable economic education through diverse courses and opportunities. Our teaching-focused faculty are committed to meeting students' interests and career goals through classroom instruction, reading and discussion colloquia, events, and internships. While prioritizing teaching, our faculty also actively engage in research, publishing on a wide range of policy-relevant topics including immigration, national defense, foreign policy, marijuana legalization, environmental economics, and institutional mechanisms to improve women's welfare.

We are especially interested in candidates whose research engages topics such as rules-based policy, monetary disequilibrium, nominal GDP targeting, and alternative monetary arrangements. A complementary area of interest is the history of economic ideas as it pertains to monetary institutions and public choice analysis (without requiring specialization in History of Economic Thought broadly).

  • Contribute to the intellectual life of the department through seminars, mentoring, and curriculum development.
  • Engage in service to the department, college, university, and broader community, consistent with rank.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Economics (or equivalent) by the start of the Fall 2026 semester.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach core macro/monetary courses at the undergraduate level.
  • Evidence of, or potential for, a sustained research program in the areas noted above.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Research and teaching that highlight monetary theory and policy with applications to U.S. central banking (e.g., rules versus discretion, lender-of-last-resort, operational frameworks).
  • Secondary field aligning with U.S. Economic History, Public Choice, or Law & Economics.
  • Experience with high-impact teaching practices, online pedagogy, and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds.
