Overview

Under supervision of the Chief Mechanical Inspector, performs technical work associated with the reviewing of mechanical plans to assure compliance with the Florida Building Code, City of Sunrise Ordinances, and other applicable codes. As required, an incumbent in this classification performs mechanical field inspections as needed and a variety of other duties associated with enforcement of the Florida Building Code (FBC).

Responsibilities

• Performs plan reviews of buildings and structures in accordance with the Florida Building Code (FBC) and the Broward County Amendments to the Florida Building Code, and other codes, standards and regulatory requirements.
• Performs field inspections of all mechanical discipline related components, including work and materials, used or installed in new construction, additions, alterations, or repairs as outlined in the FBC and Broward County Amendments to the Florida Building Code.
• May issue a stop work order under the direction of the Chief Mechanical Inspector and / or Building Official when work is in violation of the Code or creates a hazard to life or property.
• Investigates complaints of work performed without the required permits and documents any violations found.
• Assists in the preparation for prosecution of code violators and represents the City at Special Magistrate hearings.
• Provides superior customer service and correspondence with property owners, contractors, architects, engineers, and developers requesting information regarding the Codes in effect, plan review comments, and / or inspections performed or to be performed.
• Answers technical questions concerning the Florida Building Code for field mechanical inspectors, depending on area of expertise.
• Performs related work as required.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in various environments including the office and field locations within the City. Shifts and hours may vary and may include evenings, weekends and holidays. Some duties may require exposure to adverse conditions and environments, including water exposure in locations not accessible to the physically handicapped.

Physical : Must have sufficient strength and agility to lift, kneel, bend, reach and climb stairs or ladders. Prolonged sitting or standing may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and operate a City-issued vehicle.

Sensory

The ability to perceive visual cues, communicate orally and in writing, adapt to changing workload, and interact with City staff and the public.

Thorough knowledge of mechanical inspections, procedures, and practices; thorough knowledge of the Florida Building Code and related codes; ability to read and interpret construction plans, evaluate details for compliance, and identify deviations; ability to manage multiple high-priority assignments; ability to enforce regulations professionally and impartially; strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to prepare clear written reports; ability to operate a City-issued vehicle; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to work in a fast-paced environment with independent judgment; commitment to respectful, inclusive interactions with diverse groups.
