The Patrol Officer (Police Officer 1) supports students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors by monitoring activity on campus to maintain peace and enforce laws, and supports the college by ensuring a safe educational and work environment. The Henry County Campus (HCC) is the home campus for this position. However, the officer may be required to perform police duties at the other DSCC campus locations.
Responsibilities
- Perform foot and vehicle patrols of campus to preserve the peace and enforce the rules and regulations of the college, state, federal and local laws; direct and manage vehicular traffic; secure and unlock campus areas as needed.
- Respond to calls for service; investigate motor vehicle incidents, criminal offenses, and non-criminal incidents; take appropriate law enforcement or investigative action. Monitor and review security camera recordings to assist in investigations and ensure campus safety.
- Conduct investigations of crimes or incidents on campus; question victims, witnesses, and suspects; develop leads, search crime scenes, analyze evidence, arrest offenders, prepare cases for testimony, and testify in court and disciplinary proceedings.
- Assist students, faculty, staff, and visitors as needed; participate in emergency planning; assist with emergency management and safety training and coordination; conduct safety equipment checks as assigned.
- Maintain Tennessee P.O.S.T certification by attending training as necessary; attend additional training as required for the college and department.
- Develop and maintain professional rapport with local emergency response agencies representing the college and department.
- Prepare and maintain various reports and records as required.
- May perform other duties as required and / or assigned.
Leadership and Supervision
Does not have supervisory responsibilities. Most work is performed without direct supervision; position reports directly to and receives supervision from the department Chief.
Qualifying Job Standards
Required
High school diploma.Must be currently Tennessee P.O.S.T certified or P.O.S.T certified in another state and in good standing. (Note : P.O.S.T certified officers from another state, or in-state officers with a break in service of more than three (3) years but less than seven (7) years, or officers who attended an approved basic law enforcement school but were hired two (2) years after training completion will be required to attend the Tennessee P.O.S.T approved transition school within the first six (6) months of hire.)Must meet or exceed the minimum standard requirements as per TCA 38-8-106.Official background check required prior to a job offer.Knowledge of campus policies and campus jurisdictional areas.Knowledge of city, county, and state laws and court proceedings.Knowledge of effective methods of investigation and police / security work.Ability to operate law-enforcement equipment.Ability to meet institutional and local requirements related to arrest authority and weapons use.Basic knowledge of computer equipment and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).Preferred
Associate degree or higher in Criminal Justice Technology or related field.At least two years of law enforcement experience.Behavioral Core Competencies

Work is performed in a variety of settings, including indoor and outdoor environments. Exposed to different weather conditions; some work in temperature-controlled office settings with good lighting.
Physical Demands
Frequent movement by foot and patrol vehicle; ability to operate police equipment including firearms, taser, handcuffs, baton, and communications equipment.Must complete required training including mandatory annual P.O.S.T training.Must wear a ballistic vest; ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting up to 100 pounds; various physical movements including reaching, climbing, stooping, kneeling, jumping, running, and crouching.Must work different shifts, some holidays, and some weekends.Compensation and Benefits
Minimum starting pay is $41,600 annually ($21.33 per hour), with pay increases to a maximum of $49,900 with additional experience.
