Position Summary
The Medical Assistant (MA) supports the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care by performing clinical and administrative tasks in a clinic setting. The MA works under the supervision of licensed medical professionals and ensures the smooth operation of day-to-day clinical functions while supporting our mission of providing comprehensive healthcare to homeless and medically underserved populations.
Responsibilities & Expectations
Clinical Duties
- Prepare patients for examination and treatment by taking vital signs, medical history, and performing basic assessments.
- Assist providers with exams, procedures, and treatments in accordance with scope of practice.
- Administer injections, immunizations, and medications as ordered by licensed providers.
- Perform EKGs, point-of-care tests, and other diagnostic procedures as directed.
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens for processing and ensure proper labeling and handling.
- Maintain and clean exam rooms and medical equipment according to infection control standards.
- Follow infection control and safety protocols including proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Assist with minor procedures and wound care under provider supervision.
- Perform vision and hearing screenings as required for patient care.
- Prepare and maintain medical instruments and equipment for procedures.
Administrative Duties
Schedule patient appointments and manage provider calendars to optimize clinic flow.Manage referrals to specialists and coordinate follow-up care instructions.Answer phones, return patient calls, and provide test results as directed by providers.Document patient encounters accurately in Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.Maintain inventory and order medical and office supplies as needed.Process prior authorization requests and insurance verification as assigned.Prepare medical records and documentation for patient visits and procedures.Assist with patient registration and insurance verification processes.Coordinate laboratory and radiology appointments for patients.Manage patient flow and waiting room operations to minimize delays.Communication & Coordination
Communicate effectively with patients, families, clinical team members, and providers.Coordinate patient care by relaying instructions, test results, and follow-up information.Ensure patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations at all times.Provide patient education regarding medications, procedures, and health maintenance as directed.Assist patients with understanding treatment plans and discharge instructions.Coordinate care between multiple providers and departments.Communicate with pharmacy regarding medication refills and prior authorizations.Performs additional duties and special projects as assigned by Clinical Coordinator.Requirements, Education and Licensure
Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant programCertification : Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent credential preferredHigh school diploma or GED requiredMinimum 1 years of clinical experience in healthcare setting preferredKnowledge of medical terminology and basic clinical proceduresBilingual skills (Spanish and / or Haitian Creole) highly preferred
