Summer Cooley Crew Student Worker Job DescriptionJune 21- August 6, 2026Effective Date: November 2025About the Program One of the nation's premier boarding schools, Phillips Academy offers a number of summer programs for rising 7th through 12th grade students that are held on its picturesque campus just 21 miles north of Boston. Collectively the programs are referred to as "Andover Summer". Our flagship program, Summer Session, engages students in an innovative five-week residential program. More than 60 courses are offered, ranging from computer science to marine biology, from ethics and philosophy to economics. Mathematics & Science for Minority Students - better known as (MS)² - is a residential, STEM scholarship program for academically talented high school students who come from communities who are underrepresented in the math and/or science fields. About the Role Through its Cooley Crew summer work program, the Phillips Academy Summer Session offers a limited number of positions to high school students and recent high school graduates. Cooley Crew members are charged with a wide variety of duties in support of the running of Andover's summer programs, including providing support for summer setup and wrap-up, assisting with the administration of student activities and events, and providing office support as needed. Cooley Crew members are integral to the successful operation of Andover's summer programming, and the role requires a high level of self-direction and organization, as well as an ability to collaborate closely with others and communicate effectively. This role is primarily student-facing.
The tasks and skills listed below represent an attempt to characterize the basic commitments of a Cooley Crew member but, inevitably, they do not capture the full multifaceted nature of the role.
Minimum Job Qualifications- At least 16 years of age by the start date of summer session. Work permit required for those ages 16-17
- Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, dynamic environment requiring both the ability to take direction and the readiness to problem-solve
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing several tasks at once.
- Ability to work independently, without substantial guidance or supervision.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, which may include delegation of tasks to others, regular communication about the status of projects, and sharing responsibilities.
- Ability to lift 30 lbs. or less.
Essential Duties- Work closely with the Summer Session's Coordinator of Student Activities, in support of the summer student activities program.
- Assist with program set-up at the start of Summer Session, working with textbook orders, distribution, linen delivery, registration day, dorm/classroom readiness etc.
- Contribute to Summer Session's social media presence by regularly capturing images of on-campus events, classes, and daily life to be posted to Instagram and Facebook.
- Assist the Director of Student Activities with organizing and loading buses for field trips, college trips and weekend trips.
- Assist at the close of summer, ensuring that the school is ready to start the regular session in September.
- Monitor academic buildings during the school week (Monday to Saturday) and provide on-call support to the Summer Session office staff and interns.
- Sit in on breakfast and lunch at Paresky Commons during the school week (Monday through Saturday) on a rotating basis.
- Support student attendance procedures by seeking out missing students under the direction of deans and interns.
- Plan and oversee a Lower School Afternoon Activities athletics period, mentored by Athletic Director as needed.
- Assist the Director of College Counseling with college trip sign-ups during lunch on Monday and Tuesdays.
- Willingness to take on a myriad of additional small tasks before, during, and after Summer Session.
Compensation Cooley Crew members receive an hourly wage of $15.00 plus breakfast and lunch when the dining facility is available during the eight weeks. No housing is offered for this position.
