Library Clerk
JOB SUMMARY The purpose of the class is to perform routine library functions and general clerical work in assigned service. Provides assistance to patrons with locating and checking out materials, shelving library materials and other clerical duties as assigned; and to provide professional and courteous customer service at all times. The class is given a general outline of work to be performed and is free to develop work methods and sequences; work is reviewed periodically by supervisor.
DUTIES Essential job functions include : assisting patrons with locating resources and checking in and out materials, updating patron records and issuing library cards, placing holds on books and materials as requested, inspecting returned materials for damage, verifying due date and computing and receiving any applicable fines, retrieving deposited materials from book return, preparing library for opening and closing, ensuring previously shelved items are in correct order, assisting the public in the use of technology, providing proactive customer service in assisting patrons in all areas of the library, performing general administrative / clerical work as required, attending trainings, meetings, workshops, conferences, etc., as necessary to maintain job knowledge and skills, and performing other related job duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS Education and experience : High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Special qualifications : Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent customer service skills.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS The work is light / active work : Exerting up to 35 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Work environment : Work is performed in a relatively safe, secure, and stable work environment. Dorchester County has the right to revise this job description at any time. Position type and expected hours of work : This is a full-time position; the library is open from 8am to 8pm seven days a week. Work schedules are assigned based on operational need. Employees must work 40 hours weekly to maintain full-time status. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays during emergencies or as requested. Positions may require travel throughout the county and between library branches as needed.
