SummaryThis requisition expires on February 24, 2026, but may close earlier if the position is filled prior to the expiration date. Responsible for installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining vehicle lighting, radio and related equipment in all public safety and utility vehicles.
Essential Functions and Other Important DutiesESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
DUTIES - Create radio programs for operations, maintains, and repairs digital radio network.
- Develop complex programming scripts using Motorola Customer Programming Software for various radio models and features.
- Install, program, monitor, maintain, upgrade, align, and troubleshoot handheld and mobile radios and accessories.
- Collaborate with vendors and contractors on maintenance and repair of equipment due to warranty and maintenance agreements.
- Construct major electronic systems from component parts; install, program, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair major electronic systems and peripheral devices per manufacturer's specifications and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations.
- Comprehend and utilize highly complex blueprints, schematics and wiring diagrams to complete installations and Radio System and troubleshooting.
- Maintain contact with the division and/or dispatch center; respond to emergencies as necessary.
- Maintain inventory and documentation of vehicle equipment; maintain database on the information.
- Maintain parts inventory of the supplies necessary to keep the bay operational.
- Coordinate with customers and suppliers to schedule installations and repairs.
- Operate and maintain safe and appropriate use of equipment; follow all safety rules.
- Complete work order request forms accurately and thoroughly.
- Comply with applicable safety rules, regulations, laws, polices, and procedures including but not limited to, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), shop safety, vehicle battery safety and airbag safety.

Job RequirementsEDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS - High School diploma or equivalent; and,
- Three (3) years' experience in electronics, or related field; and,
- Must have one (1) of the following certifications: Federal General Radiotelephone Operators License (FGROL), General Communications Technician I & II certification, or related Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) certification,
OR
- Any combination of related education, experience, certifications, and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job.
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The list below represents the knowledge, skill, and/or ability to perform this job successfully:
- Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local Government laws, ordinances, and regulations.
- Knowledge of vehicle wiring and safety systems including, but not limited to, air bags and restraint systems.
- Knowledge of the Motorola 7/800 MHz radio system and sub-systems.
- Knowledge of SONET Network equipment.
- Knowledge of basic PC use and basic network connectivity.
- Skill in installation and wiring of all equipment in all types of vehicles including, but not limited to, high amperage fuse designs, radios and antennas, headlight flashers, radar units, sirens, gun locks, video equipment and recorders, vehicle computer systems, computer programmable serial controlled light bar systems, strobe lights and strobe packs, LED lighting, switch boxes, PA systems, flashlights and chargers, DC/AC inverters, consoles, equipment trays, safety cages and computer mounts.
- Skill in installation and wiring of K-9 systems including, but not limited to, bail-out units, Hot Dog temperature control systems, cooling fans and radio frequency dog safety alert systems.
- Sill in the fabrication of custom brackets and mounts.
- Skilled in reading and interpreting plans, blueprints, schematics, and/or other related electrical documents.
- Skill in complex problem solving; identifying problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
- Skill at the advanced level, working with applicable Microsoft Office 365 products, and other software systems to complete work.
- Skill in providing exceptional service to internal and external customers.
- Skill in interpersonal relationships, including using tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Ability to perform basic RF troubleshooting and other testing on Motorola radios.
- Ability to use and care for tools and equipment.
- Ability to work at heights greater than 10 feet, and work in enclosed spaces.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow safety protocols and safe work procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in oral and written forms, for the needs of the audience.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
- Ability to work independently and/or with team environment while handling multiple tasks and changing priorities with attention to detail.
- Ability to understand, interpret, and apply rules, policies, and procedures operations.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT - Must have and maintain a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
- Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, employment history verification, and social security number verification.
- Must pass a physical examination.
- Must have and maintain one (1) of the following certifications: Federal General Radiotelephone Operators License (FGROL), General Communications Technician I & II certification, or related Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) certification.
- Must meet civilian hiring standards of the Denton Police Department.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical RequirementsSAFETY - Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment; ensure equipment is in safe operating condition.
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting and climbing; operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - Safety Sensitive (Subject to random drug testing): Yes.
- Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office and testing equipment, wire, voltmeter, amp meter, directional watt meter, and a variety of manual, electric, and hydraulic hand tools, testing equipment, and wearing appropriate safety and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Posture: Prolonged standing; Moderate sitting, stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, climbing, and twisting.
- Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.
- Lifting: Lifting no more than 100 pounds and carrying up to 50 pounds.
- Environment: Works inside and outside with exposure to sun, heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather, noise, dust, chemicals, odors, heights, potentially hazardous conditions, uneven ground, and rough terrain; occasionally requires irregular and/or prolonged hours.
- Travel: Travels to City of Denton buildings and professional meetings as required. Typical travel from site to site is 50% of time.
- Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position. Must be able to work after normal business hours, holidays, and weekends, as needed. Must be able to respond to call-in within 30 minutes and be responsible for call when your name comes up on rotation list. Must be available to be on stand-by and work emergency callouts, 24 hours/7 days per week.
