The Senior Advisor reports to the Director of Advising and Career Development in the Office of Student Affairs and Wellbeing and plays a critical role in providing the academic and career development guidance and support essential to a successful medical student experience. The advisor manages a caseload of 75-100 students, overseeing and directing the development of the student's Individualized Learning Plan (ILP), medical specialty exploration and choice, and plan for the individualized 4th year.

Responsibilities

  • Provide proactive and holistic individual and group advising and career development services to a caseload of 75+ medical students including medical specialty exploration, residence, goal setting, course selection, clerkship scheduling, academic progress, career planning, and personal advising.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for referring medical students to additional academic, career and mental health / personal support resources from the School of Medicine, the Hackensack Meridian Health Network, and community, as needed.
  • Develop, plan, and present workshops and seminars on relevant advising and career topics.
  • Complete appropriate and timely record keeping / tracking of caseload, student meetings, and responses to student, faculty and staff questions, including working with constituent management software.
  • Serve as primary contact for all faculty, clerkship director, and small group facilitator reporting concerns about students.
  • Utilize project management skills to carry out departmental projects as assigned by the Director of Advising and Career Development, including faculty development; working with Specialty Interest Groups, mentoring, career development, orientation, and preparing and reviewing reports.
  • Research, identify, and stay up-to-date on resources, best practices and future trends to continuously improve offerings to students.
  • Serve on various committees within the School of Medicine including participation in Quality Improvement Projects aimed at curriculum development.
  • Requires several hours of evening availability each week, scheduled in consultation with the Director.
  • Other duties and / or projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Master's degree in Counseling, College Student Personnel, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Higher Education Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience providing full-time advising, counseling, or career development services in a University / College setting.
  • Ability to demonstrate exceptional skills in coordinating and working collaboratively with diverse groups to achieve complex objectives.
  • Ability to develop, manage and carry out projects with minimal supervision, utilizing best practices.
  • Exceptional skill in and comfort with navigating and following up on personal wellness and mental health conversations.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including the ability to act in a sensitive and professional manner, exercise discretion, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage, organize, and prioritize a workload of diverse tasks.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on a variety of tasks.
  • Interest in the healthcare field.
  • Proficient computer skills that may include but are not limited to Microsoft Office and / or Google Suite platforms.
  • Education, Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Preferred

  • PhD or equivalent in Student Counseling, College Student Personnel, Psychology, Social Work, Education, Higher Education Administration, Education or a related field.
  • Experience in medical school operations.
  • At least 1-year post-Masters and 5+ years full-time work experience in academic or career advising.
  • Experience working with high functioning / honors students, pre-health advising and / or post-baccalaureate programs.
  • Compensation and Benefits

  • Minimum rate of $80,907.84 Annually. The posted rate of pay is a reasonable good faith estimate of the minimum base pay for this role at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act and does not reflect the full value of our market-competitive total rewards package.
