Nursing Assistant

Summary : The Nursing Assistant performs complex age-specific nursing care for patients with dementia with a variety of physical, behavioral, or psychological needs. The incumbent continues to provide care under supervision of a Registered Nurse, and are learning to perform complex nursing skills, and will refer issues / questions to supervisors, higher graded NAs, licensed nursing staff or other healthcare professionals.

Responsibilities : The Nurse Assistant performs complex age-specific nursing care for adult and geriatric patients with a variety of physical, mental, behavioral, or psychological needs. The Nurse Assistant is learning to perform basic nursing assistant duties under close supervision in a variety of health care settings; outpatient, inpatient, community living care, residential, acute, or sub-acute. The Nurse Assistant will care for patients, residents with acute to chronic conditions. All duties performed will be completed under close supervision with appropriate training and competencies for assigned task. Will appropriately utilize glucose monitoring machine to collect and document appropriate glucose readings for assigned Veteran. Maintains positive therapeutic relationships by displaying respect for human dignity with patient, families and / or significant others utilizing learned communication skills. Begins to utilize observation skills for data collection, reporting and recording patient / resident observations. Performs aspects of nursing care to meet patient's needs for the following : personal hygiene, physical comfort, exercise, rest, nutrition, prevention of skin breakdown & rehabilitative aspects of care. Nurse Assistant begins to engage in-group activities such as off-unit trips, reality orientation, current events and other therapeutic groups. The Nurse Assistant learns to utilize principles of proper body mechanics while caring for patients. Reports patient observations to the RN and or other members of the treatment team. The Nurse Assistant Is trained to set up patient care related equipment and organizes and obtains routine supplies and equipment. Assists with orienting patient / family to unit routines and policies. Works as a cooperative, courteous member of the interdisciplinary team. The Nurse Assistant safeguards the patient's right to privacy by judiciously protecting information of a confidential nature. The Nurse Assistant uses proper safety practices. The Nurse Assistant utilize principles of proper body mechanics and follows procedures for use of patient care equipment to prevent injury to self or others in all settings such as utilization of lifting equipment.

Qualifications : Basic Requirements : United States Citizenship : Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Training. The candidate must have one year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3. English Language Proficiency. Nursing Assistants appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Grandfathering Provisions. All Nursing Assistants employed in VHA as of March 12, 2015 are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the series and grade held that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.

Physical Requirements : This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The NA may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative / invasive procedures. The NA may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The NA must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. The NA must be willing to complete annual employee health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.

Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave : Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
