Mail Processing - Driver

The Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual for a permanent position of Mail Processing - Driver at the Washington Corrections Center in Shelton, Washington, within the Mail Services Department. This position is the first line of protection for the facility through inspection of all incoming and outgoing packages and mail.

Washington Corrections Center (WCC) is located 35 miles west of Olympia, the state capitol. WCC is the Reception and Diagnostic Center, a close-custody facility with the primary responsibility to process, test, and classify all adult male felons sentenced to prison in Washington State. The facility has eight living units and houses approximately 1,500 incarcerated individuals. 600 incarcerated individuals are screened and assessed each month. WCC is also major hub for transfer of incarcerated individuals to and from facilities throughout the state.

This position supports DOC's mission to improve public safety through the visual, physical, and electronic inspection of incoming and outgoing mail and packages in effort to eliminate risks associated with unauthorized transfer of contraband materials and information across institutional boundaries.

The Mail Processor-Driver independently performs mail services including, collecting, screening sorting processing, and delivering domestic and foreign mail utilizing the US Postal Service, agency internal mail systems, and various ground and air shipping services.

The following are some of the daily tasks :

• X-Ray and visually scan all incoming mail items for potential contraband, explosive devices, illegal narcotics, and conformity to established policies and procedures.
• Log, open and inspect 1 / 1 mail and packages to ensure conformity to applicable policies and guidelines; remove money orders for separate processing.
• Identify, log and report contraband in accordance with policy; initiate rejection and maintain documentation.
• Reject restricted items in accordance with established policies and procedures governing mail; notify 1 / 1 and sender of rejection.
• Sort and separate facility mail, periodicals, non-profit and bulk mail. Look up current I / I location. Verify, log and document I / I legal mail.
• Record all incoming money orders. Remove and document enclosures i.e. Social Security cards, marriage / birth certificates, ID cards, Insurance cards.
• Document and enter incoming 1 / 1 packages. Document and enter incoming publications.
• Place approved items into mail slots, bins and / or mail bags for delivery to I / I living units.
• Determine most effective method for sending mail items and packages out of facility.
• Complete mail rejections for items that do not meet DOC policy for delivery.
• Collect and deliver mail and packages including bulk, insured, registered, certified, and standard mail.
• Accurately identify and deliver staff and 1 / 1 mail. Conduct secure deliveries. Collect outgoing mail and packages from all pick-up points within the facility. Use hand trucks, dollies and carts to complete task.
• Will utilize motor vehicle to deliver and collect mail items. Will drive to local post office to pick-up and deliver mail items.
• Provide information, answer inquires, interact with various stake holders telephonically / electronically and resolve routine issues.
• Operate and maintain equipment for the screening, shipping and mailing of items.
• Other duties as prescribed of Supervisor directed.
