The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, located in Winston-Salem ("The City of the Arts"), was the rst state-supported, residential school of its kind in the nation. Established by the North Carolina General Assembly in 1963, UNCSA opened in Winston-Salem in 1965 and became part of the University of North Carolina system in 1972. More than 1,200 students from middle school through graduate school train for careers in the arts. The University of North Carolina School of the Arts is dedicated entirely to the professional training of talented students in the performing, visual, and moving image arts. The chancellor, deans, and faculty work with students in a residential setting to create an educational community that is intimate, demanding, and performance-centered. Learning is enriched by access to an academic program responsive to a conservatory curriculum. Founded to be both an educational institution and a resource enhancing the cultural life of the state of North Carolina and the Southeast, UNCSA offers numerous public performances, on- and off-campus, as well as community education in the arts.

Position Summary
The School of Filmmaking is seeking a visionary creative film/video practitioner and educator to join our faculty in a position that bridges fiction and non-fiction filmmaking. We are seeking applicants with history of working with or teaching directing, acting for non-actors, staging for the camera, research methodologies, and experience teaching cinema studies courses.

This position will introduce students to a broad range of cinematic storytelling approaches through classroom exercises, and presenting references to a wide range of films and videos that push current paradigms.

The UNCSA School of Filmmaking recognizes the value of cinema as both intellectual inquiry and artistic practice. We are interested in a faculty member who helps students generate compelling audience experiences and can contribute to the evolution of narrative form.

A successful applicant will be a filmmaker focusing on fictional and non-fictional cinema (including short films and videos made in a broad range of structures including, but not limited to essay, documentary, and installation). The candidate will have an established or promising record of accomplishment with those forms at festivals, museums, galleries, or other exhibition and distribution platforms. The ability to demonstrate an innovative teaching philosophy and practice is essential.

Competitive applicants will exhibit a strong conceptual and technical understanding of the field and a record of training and mentoring undergraduate populations as creative artists capable of building careers in their chosen metier. We are especially interested in faculty members who will strengthen the program's integration of industrial skills with scholarship and creative practice.

Description of Responsibilities and Duties
  • Teach undergraduate courses predominantly in the areas of fiction and non-fiction filmmaking, directing, acting for non-actors, staging for the camera, and cinema studies.
  • Act as academic advisor and mentor.
  • Evaluate students on a regular basis and participate in evaluations at the end of the year.
  • Attend faculty meetings, pre-production and production meetings, and any other meetings deemed necessary by the dean.
  • Assist in the admissions process by interviewing prospective students.
  • Participate on committees as needed.
  • Abide by and support all School of Filmmaking policies and procedures as outlined in the School of Filmmaking Student Handbook and Safety Handbook.
  • Abide by and support all UNCSA policies and procedures as outlined in the UNCSA Faculty Manual.
  • Ability to perform work on campus during the academic year.
  • Other duties as assigned by the dean.

Required Qualifications
An earned doctorate or master's degree in the teaching discipline, OR an earned master's degree with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline, OR equivalent professional/experiential qualifications, OR equivalent combination of education and professional experience.

UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
