Position Overview The Data Engineer Director will be a hands-on leader responsible for architecting, building, and managing Whitewater's data infrastructure, strategy, and team.

You will lead, mentor, and grow a DevOps team of three w ith the objective of creating a scalable data ecosystem that supports analytics, marketing, operations, and provides cross-departmental tools.

Key Responsibilities Team Leadership & Strategy Lead and Mentor :

  • Manage, hire, and develop a high-performing team of three fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.

Drive Strategy :

  • Define and own the roadmap for Whitewater's data engineering and business intelligence platform, ensuring alignment with company objectives.
  • Data Architecture & Engineering Architect Data Solutions :

  • Design, build, and maintain our entire data pipeline, from data ingestion and ETL / ELT processes to data warehousing and modeling.
  • Build the Foundation :

  • Develop robust, scalable, and reliable data infrastructure using modern cloud technologies.
  • Ensure Data Quality & Governance :

  • Implement processes to monitor data quality, ensuring data is accurate and reliable.
  • Write and maintain data definitions and documentation.
  • Business-Driven Analytics Enablement Partner for Impact :

  • Work closely with marketing and operations to understand their business questions and deliver the data solutions they need.
  • Oversee Analytics & Modeling :

  • Guide the development of key analytics models, including recency-frequency-monetary (RFM) segmentation and churn prediction, ensuring they help optimize lifetime value and retention.
  • Empower Stakeholders :

  • Build clean, structured datasets that power dashboards, reporting, and ad hoc analysis for business users across the company.   Who You Are Technical & Hands-On : Expert in SQL and Python, turning raw data into actionable insights while tackling complex technical challenges.
  • Business-Focused :

  • Skilled at translating business questions into analytical frameworks and connecting data to outcomes.
  • Analytics-Savvy :

  • Experienced with customer segmentation, cohort analysis, churn modeling, and lifetime value optimization.
  • Pragmatic Leader :

  • Balances precision with speed, leads technical teams, mentors, and manages projects end-to-end.
  • Collaborative :

  • Communicates complex technical concepts clearly and delivers measurable business impact.   Qualifications 10+ years of hands-on experience in data engineering, dev ops, or a related field, with at least 4 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field (advanced degree is a plus).
  • Experience in a high-growth, multi-unit retail, subscription / membership, or ecommerce business is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions is required.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Python and SQL.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud data platforms like; Snowflake, AWS (S3, Redshift, Glue), Azure (Data Factory, Synapse), or Google Cloud (BigQuery, Dataflow).
  • Proven experience building and optimizing ETL / ELT pipelines and a strong understanding of data modeling and governance.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Looker) to support downstream analytics.
  • Knowledge of modern data stack tools (e.g., dbt, Airflow, Fivetran) is preferred.
  • Conceptual understanding of CRM development, data architecture, and integration strategies.
