Job description

Position : Chief Operating Officer

Location : Washington, DC

Status : Full-time, Exempt, 40 hours / week

Reports to : President and Executive Director

Supervises : Vice Presidents

Term : Immediately

Salary : $175,000–$225,000

Benefits : Employer contribution to 401(k); 401(k); dental, health, and vision insurance; home office stipend; paid time off; training & development

Location : Washington, DC

Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC ("AAJC") is a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1991. Our mission is to advance the civil and human rights of Asian Americans and to build and promote a fair and equitable society for all. We work on policy advocacy, litigation, research, public education, and community engagement. AAJC is a member of the Asian Americans Advancing Justice affiliation and collaborates with affiliates in Atlanta, Chicago, and Southern California.

Position overview

The Chief Operating Officer is a newly created role that works closely with the President and Executive Director to manage the executive team and oversee internal operations. The COO guides organizational priorities and coordinates the work of the Vice Presidents, while serving as a sounding board and adviser to the President and Executive Director.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations ensuring efficiency, effectiveness, and alignment with the executive team across policy, programs, budget, finance, and grants; communicate with the President and Executive Director as appropriate.
  • Act as thought partner to implement AAJC’s mission, strategic plan, and program goals.
  • Keep the President and Executive Director informed and involved in key decisions as needed by day-to-day events and performance.
  • Lead and coordinate strategic meeting preparation and follow-up.
  • Oversee the executive team and communicate leadership updates to the President and Executive Director.
  • Foster an engaged leadership culture and cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Guide prioritization of institutional goals and drive continuous improvement to optimize workflows and ensure timely plan development and execution.
  • Monitor organizational culture, staff well-being, project statuses, strategic priorities, opportunities, and challenges for the President and Executive Director.

  • Manage policies and procedures with integrity and confidentiality.
  • Participate in and lead decision-making, understanding outcomes and accountability.
  • Apply AAJC values to all responsibilities.
  • Attend AAJC and Board meetings; participate in ad hoc committees as requested.
  • Be available to travel and work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Educational and professional experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required. JD or advanced degree in business, public administration, organizational management, nonprofit management, or related field highly preferred.
  • At least 15 years of progressive management experience in nonprofit operations related to this position.
  • Broad knowledge of public policy, organizational planning, and management.
  • Ability to meet internal and external deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with Asian American, civil and / or human rights issues preferred.
  • Skills, knowledge, and abilities

  • Strategic thinking, change leadership, strong judgment and confidentiality.
  • Ability to measure program outcomes with valid metrics.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups and harmonize viewpoints.
  • Collaborative leadership, coaching, and management of staff.
  • Ability to make hard decisions and create a path forward.
