Position Summary
Revenue Auditors fill a variety of and are assigned to work with specific tax areas: (Partnerships and S-Corporations). Assignment to each specific role or tax area will be based on agency needs.
Return Auditors examine tax returns, correspond with taxpayers for additional information, and prepare audit work papers and reports from an office location. Little to no travel is required for Return auditor positions.
Books & Records Auditors conduct audits of individuals and a variety of business entities independently and may assist higher level auditors in performing large, complex audits. Many audits are initiated and conducted at the taxpayer’s business location.

The starting pay rate for these positions is $29.05 per hour, .

Employees who have an active license as a certified public accountant in Wisconsin, or another state may may be eligible for an additional add-on of $1 per hour.

The classification of these positions is Revenue Auditor 1, which is in Pay Schedule 07, Pay Range 04. Pay will be set in accordance with the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan in effect at the time of hire. Starting pay for current state employees may vary based on applicable provisions in the Compensation Plan.
Job Details
Mandatory New Employee Orientation: These auditor positions will be required to report to our on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 for one day of in-person New Employee Orientation (NEO) training.
Mandatory Training: These auditor positions will be required to complete approximately six months of in-person and remote training which will take place at each employee's assigned, primary office location and at our . Travel reimbursement will be provided consistent with State of Wisconsin travel guidelines. Successful completion of this training is required and there is limited availability to use leave during this time.
Background Checks: Due to the nature of this position, final candidates will be subject to criminal background, fingerprint, and tax compliance checks.
I-9 Requirements: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship) at the time of appointment. The Department of Revenue does not sponsor work or student visas and is not an eligible OPT employer for those with F1 visas. DOR participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with Form I-9 information for all new employees to confirm authorization to work in the U.S.
Probationary Period: A probationary period will be required.
Remote Work/Telework up to 60%: These positions have the opportunity to gradually increase remote work up to 60%, based on performance and work unit needs, after completion of the first 12 months of the probationary period. Remote work is intended to be performed primarily in the State of Wisconsin and is subject to change based on business needs.
Travel: Books and Records positions require occasional travel with some overnight stays. A valid driver’s license and ability to use a personal vehicle for travel is required. Reimbursement of travel expenses is available consistent with State of Wisconsin .
