Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW :

The Associate Vice President (AVP), Behavioral Health, provides executive-level operational and clinical leadership for Akin’s statewide behavioral health portfolio. This role ensures excellence in practice management across all behavioral health service lines, aligning clinical quality, operational efficiency, and fiscal sustainability.

The AVP oversees and supports four Clinical Directors, serving as the central integrator for standardized workflows, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement initiatives across programs according to organizational policies. The position is responsible for ensuring that services meet Akin’s strategic goals, regulatory requirements, and values-aligned, trauma-informed care principles. This position will also have, as necessary, access to paper and electronic protected healthcare information (PHI) and confidential identifiable information (CII) to perform related job duties and responsibilities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES :

Strategic & Operational Leadership

  • Provide oversight of Akin’s behavioral health operations, ensuring programmatic alignment with organizational strategy, CARF standards, and funding requirements.
  • Lead the integration of clinical and operational workflows across WISe, Outpatient, Therapeutic Early Childhood programs, and statewide initiatives.
  • Establish performance goals, key metrics, and accountability systems for program directors; monitor progress and intervene when needed to ensure results.
  • Partner with Finance, HR, and Contracts to ensure staffing, budgets, and compliance systems meet program needs.

Practice Management & Quality Assurance

  • Standardize operational practices in scheduling, documentation, billing, caseload management, and compliance monitoring.
  • Ensure clinical services operate efficiently while maintaining fidelity to evidence-based and measurement-informed care practices.
  • Lead quarterly operational reviews with directors, identifying trends and guiding corrective action plans.
  • Serve as the senior point of escalation for operational or clinical service delivery issues.
  • People Leadership & Development

  • Supervise and coach direct reports, fostering leadership growth and operational excellence.
  • Ensure appropriate clinical supervision structures are in place across all programs.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, reflective practice, and continuous improvement.
  • Champion workforce development strategies, including onboarding, professional development, and succession planning for key roles.
  • Systems Improvement & Change Management

  • Direct system-wide improvement initiatives such as EMR optimization, CARF readiness, and process redesign.
  • Apply change management best practices to implement new workflows, technology, and service delivery models.
  • Facilitate cross-program collaboration to address service gaps and enhance client experience.
  • External Relations & Representation

  • Represent Akin’s behavioral health programs with funders, accreditation bodies, and community partners.
  • Collaborate with statewide partners to strengthen referral pathways, integrate services, and influence systems policy.
  • Support the development of funding proposals, county and state contracts, and strategic partnerships that advance behavioral health service delivery.
  • QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Master’s degree or higher in behavioral health, nursing, or other healthcare discipline.
  • Independent clinical licensure in Washington State (e.g., LMHC, LMFT, LICSW, Psychologist, RN, ARNP, OT, or other applicable license).
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in behavioral health or closely related healthcare settings, including multi-site operational oversight.
  • Expertise in trauma-informed care, reflective supervision, and measurement-informed practice.
  • Advanced training in practice management, change management, or quality improvement preferred.
  • Experience in nonprofit or community-based behavioral health organizations preferred.
  • Background or expertise in infant and early childhood mental health preferred.
  • Demonstrated success managing senior clinical leaders and guiding multidisciplinary teams to achieve operational and clinical excellence.
  • Proven ability to lead diverse teams with an inclusive approach, applying principles of accessibility, equity, and belonging across recruitment, supervision, decision-making, and overall team development.
  • Direct experience and deep understanding of CARF accreditation processes, Medicaid billing systems, and Medicaid-funded behavioral health services, including Behavioral Health Agency licensing and compliance standards.
  • Experience with system integration or technology design and implementation initiatives in behavioral health.
  • Strong operational leadership skills, with proven success standardizing workflows and processes across multiple behavioral health programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance clinical quality, fiscal responsibility, and operational efficiency.
  • Highly skilled in data-driven decision-making, performance monitoring, and corrective action planning.
  • Ability to build trust, foster consensus, and hold leaders accountable to measurable results.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams, electronic medical record (EMR) systems, and virtual meeting platforms.
  • COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS :

In addition to a competitive base salary of $130,000 to $160,000, Akin also provides a comprehensive benefits package which includes access to robust health, vision, and dental insurance; 401(k) with up to 3% employer contribution; Employee Assistance Plans (EAP); Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA); Health Savings Account (HSA); Voluntary Long-Term Care Plan; Voluntary Life & Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance; short-term disability insurance; Critical Illness, Hospital, and Accident Insurance; Financial Wellness & Identity Protection; Voluntary Long-Term Care; and 14 days of vacation accrued in the first year, 12 days of sick pay accrued per year, 2 Employee Appreciation days, as well as 14 observed paid annual holidays per year.
