Description
The School of Engineering & Applied Science (SEAS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks candidates for two open-rank, tenure-track or tenure-eligible faculty positions in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering ( MAE ).
Appointment rank and compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. As one of the nation's top public universities, the candidates must demonstrate excellence in research and be capable of establishing a sustainable externally funded research program while conducting appropriate teaching and service.
The research area of the applicant is expected to be in dynamics & control. One position is intended for an applicant conducting research in aerospace systems.
The other position is open to all applicants in the general field of dynamics & control.
The Department of MAE has particular interest in candidates who conduct research that is complementary to the increasingly important field of hypersonics, for which UVA has existing strengths.
Other areas of interest include astronautics / space systems, robotics / autonomous systems, control theory, and vibration and shock.
The Department of MAE consists of 30 primary faculty members and 16 additional courtesy-appointment faculty across 8 additional departments of the University.
The Department of MAE has existing research expertise in biomechanics, nanomechanics, reacting and multiphase flows, computational fluid dynamics, experimental fluid mechanics, laser-based diagnostics, heat transfer in extreme environments, and robotics / autonomous systems.
UVA Engineering has established research thrusts and multidisciplinary centers in several relevant areas, including leadership and participation in the University Consortium for Applied Hypersonics (UCAH), the Rolls-Royce University Technology Center, the Center for Risk Management of Engineering Systems, and the Link Lab, an internationally recognized center for multidisciplinary cyber-physical systems research.
Founded in 1819 by former President Thomas Jefferson, the University of Virginia (UVA) is an historic, highly selective undergraduate and graduate institution, which annually ranks as one of the premier public universities in the United States.
UVA is situated in Charlottesville, Virginia, a vibrant small city that consistently ranks as one of the nation's best places to reside.
