Pay Rate : $27.00

Office Location : Portsmouth VA

Status : Full-Time

Shift : ALL (Day Shift : 6 : 00 AM – 2 : 45 PM)

Security Clearance : Not Required

Position Summary

The Structural Welder J4 will perform certified aluminum welding and related tasks aboard vessels and in shipyard environments. Candidates must be skilled in multiple welding processes and familiar with Navy standards. This is a full-time, on-site position requiring consistent adherence to quality, safety, and productivity standards.

Journeyperson Guidelines

Journeyperson 4 – Structural Welder

  • Proficient in SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW welding processes
  • Experience welding on HY-80 and HY-100 base metals
  • Able to weld steel, aluminum, copper nickel, and stainless steel
  • Must produce welds acceptable for Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
  • Skilled in using hand tools and reading weld gauges
  • Understands and applies Standard Item 1689 and 5S guidelines
  • Limited supervision required

Journeyperson 3 – Structural Welder

  • Skilled in SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW welding
  • Some pipe welding using SMAW
  • Proficient in welding various materials including aluminum
  • Capable of setting up oxygen / acetylene torch
  • Works independently with minimal supervision

    • Journeyperson 2 – Structural Welder

  • Experienced in SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW
  • Basic ability to read weld gauges and operate hand tools
  • Can set up torch equipment with supervision
  • Understands Standard Item 1689 and 5S principles

    • Journeyperson 1 – Structural Welder

  • Entry-level proficiency in SMAW, GMAW, and FCAW processes
  • Can hook up oxy-acetylene torches and read weld gauges
  • Knowledge of weld symbols
  • Requires close supervision and training

    • Requirements

  • Aluminum welding certification required
  • Familiarity with shipboard layouts and compartment navigation
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces and elevated areas
  • Must adhere to safety protocols and wear PPE as required
  • Able to read and interpret welding symbols and blueprints

    • Physical Demands

  • Lifting, climbing, kneeling, stooping, and working in confined spaces
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity required for precision welding
  • Use of torches, hand tools, and safety equipment necessary
