The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at UC Irvine Health School of Medicine is dedicated to the diagnosis and understanding of human diseases through biomedical and clinical research. Using the latest technologies, our pathologists help advance medicine by finding better ways of diagnosing, managing and treating diseases.
Your Role on the Team
The Staff Research Associate I will work in Dr. Elizabeth Head's tissue repository laboratory that collects and disseminates brain tissue and biofluids for research on Alzheimer's disease within the Down syndrome population. This position will consist of both wet lab techniques (e.g. tissue sampling, biofluid processing, etc.) as well as administrative tasks (data collection and dissemination, record keeping, working with other programs to arrange brain donations, etc.). Our lab primarily works with human brain / blood / tissue samples, with possible occasional work with animal tissue / blood.
The primary responsibility of this position will be to provide support to the brain donation program by arranging and coordinating brain donations, coordinating our donated brains through neuropath protocol, sampling brain regions & procuring biofluid samples for researcher's requests, gathering & disseminating neuropath data, updating databases, organizing neuropath core meetings and Clinical Pathological Conferences, developing and updating our protocols, educational materials, letters, and other docs, and occasional event tabling / attendance.
Expectations :
1. Full-time, 40-hour / week employment with a Mon-Fri schedule of either 8am-5pm or 9am-6pm with a one-hour lunch break.
2. Work will primarily be on-site in the laboratory, with some remote work
3. Part of this position will be splitting on-call duties to arrange brain donations remotely
4. Job includes assisting in existing projects; this position will not be associated with independent research projects
5. Must show a desire to constantly learn and master new techniques
6. Willingness to assist in tasks when the team is short-staffed and outside their normal job expectations
