Long Term Substitute Teacher - IJLA
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Long-Term Substitute Teacher reports to the Principal or designated administrator and is responsible for facilitating classroom instruction and activities for students in grades 9–12 during the absence of the regular classroom teacher. This role includes implementing provided lesson plans, assigning classwork and homework, maintain grade books, communicate with parents, supporting student learning, and maintaining a safe, structured, and respectful classroom environment. The Substitute Teacher is also expected to complete a daily report summarizing classroom activities, student behavior, and any relevant observations, which should be submitted to the Principal or designated administrator at the end of each school day.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Deliver instruction by following existing lesson plans and providing clear directions to students.
- Evaluate academic and social growth of students and keep appropriate records.
- Support student understanding by working individually or in small groups and offering additional help as needed.
- Apply effective teaching strategies and classroom management techniques to maintain student engagement.
- Utilize and create instructional resources and materials to support learning outcomes.
- Encourage student growth in self-discipline, positive self-concept, academic achievement, and create a positive educational climate where students can learn and thrive.
- Establish and uphold clear, consistent classroom expectations aligned with school-wide norms.
- Report any student misconduct or behavioral concerns to the appropriate staff, including the absent teacher and the Dean of Discipline.
- Demonstrate professionalism and uphold high standards for student safety, well-being, and equity.
- Promote fairness and respect in teacher-student relationships and foster a supportive classroom climate.
- Take daily attendance, maintain accurate seating charts, grade books, and student records.
- Collect and organize all assignments and materials completed by students during the absence.
- Follow all school policies, procedures, and student code of conduct guidelines.
- Communicate and develop professional relationships with school staff, students, parents, administration.
- Participate in school-related activities such as field trips, after-school programs, or meetings, as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Valid Substitute Teaching License certificate or Professional Educator’s License (PEL)
- At least two years of experience teaching or substitute teaching in a high school environment preferred
- Ability to successfully manage a classroom
- Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality
- Ability to work with a wide variety of people
- Exceptional organization and time management skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to speak English and Spanish fluently preferred
- Ability to maintain composure under pressure
- Ability to honor schedules and work plans
- Dependability and punctuality
- Strong project management skills, attention to detail, and effective management of multiple projects at one time
- Ability to adhere to deadlines and react to unpredictable events
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office and the Internet

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files. Approximately 50% of time spent standing as well as some lifting (under 30 lbs.)
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a general school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours; non-traditional hours may be required to perform job duties. Attendance at school sponsored events and meetings is also required.
