Administrative Responsibilities

  • Evaluates the qualifications of, selects, and recommends for appointment, the Medical Director, Associate Program Director, Academic and Clinical Coordinators, principal faculty, program staff, and instructional faculty.
  • Supervises the Medical Director, principal faculty, instructional faculty, and program staff in activities that directly relate to the PA Program.
  • In conjunction with the PA faculty and staff, and the Provost, establishes criteria for admissions, curriculum content and performance criteria for the students.
  • Oversees the development, review, and revision as necessary the mission statement, goals and competencies of the PA Program.
  • Prepares an annual budget for approval by the Provost, Vice President of Finance and the Board of Trustees and administers and maintains the approved budget.
  • Participates in the university's academic and faculty affairs to ensure the integrating of the program into the activities of the university.
  • Interacts with the university academic division chairs, faculty, and administration to promote the program's goals and academic development.
  • Provides leadership for the formulation and revision of policies, procedures and objectives, as needed for the program, in conjunction with the faculty and the Provost.
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Coordinators, faculty and staff, develops affiliation agreements with clinical sites for clinical rotations. Participates in clinical site development as necessary.
  • Chairs the PA Program Committee and Administrative Committee. Schedules regular meetings, develops agenda and helps to guide discussion.
  • Assists in the development of the didactic and clinical phase of the curriculum including, but not limited to, scheduling of students, assessment, review of student course and instructor evaluations, obtaining affiliation agreements and other duties as needed.
  • Assist in the recruitment, development and maintenance of principal faculty, instructional faculty, and staff.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Program Director, oversees the continuous collection and analysis of data necessary for self-study, accreditation, and quality improvement, which may include didactic and clinical course performance, summative assessment performance, OSCE performance, PACKRAT performance, student evaluations, End of Rotation exam performance, exit interviews, PANCE performance, graduate surveys, and other items as determined appropriate.
  • Serves as resource to the ODU marketing department and the local medical community on issues regarding PAs.
  • Participates in local and national organizations to ensure program excellence and appropriateness of the curriculum and instruction.
  • Serves on university, division and program committees as requested or designated.
  • Participates in scholarly activities in order to ensure professional growth and development.
  • Creates an atmosphere conducive to faculty and staff productivity and respect; is responsive to issues related to personnel.
  • Works effectively with university administrators and academic support services offices to address and ensure student and programmatic needs.
  • Conducts performance appraisals of staff and faculty and promotes professional development, makes promotional and salary recommendations to the Provost based on these evaluations in efforts to promote faculty and staff retention.
  • Represent the ODU PA program with professionalism throughout contacts with faculty, students, and community health partners.
  • Works in conjunction with the PA Program faculty, staff, students and the university administration to ensure that the PA program achieves and maintains continuing ARC-PA accreditation.
  • Prepares and submits ARC-PA required documents as required.

Faculty Responsibilities - Student

  • Leads new student orientation, including pertinent communications with accepted students as appropriate.
  • Based upon the evaluation and recommendation of the faculty, is responsible for the overall evaluation of the students' performance and monitors academic progress and ensures that they are approved and meet all requirements for graduation.
  • Assist and / or develop appropriate remediation plans as necessary.
  • Tracks student progress and acts accordingly in regards to strengths and weaknesses and makes recommendations for At Risk student interventions to faculty, document meetings with students as well as recommendations for the PA Progress and Promotion Committee.
  • Aids students in professional development as necessary, including, but not limited to, resume development, interview and other professional activities.
  • Assists students with administrative licensing / registration activities prior to and after graduation.
  • Tracks and maintains current student files as outlined by the program.
  • Assists and / or performs other appropriate student-directed activities as deemed necessary, including but not limited to, instruction, remediation, and academic counselling.
  • Promotes an atmosphere of collaboration and mentoring among and between classes of students and alumni of the PA Program.
  • Faculty Responsibilities - Instruction and Curriculum

  • In conjunction with the faculty, Graduate CAP, and the Faculty Senate is responsible for the organization, evaluation, on-going refinement and implementation of the program's curriculum.
  • Reviews and revises the PA Program Policies and Procedures Student Handbook at least on a yearly basis and more frequently as needed.
  • Approves the course content and education objectives submitted by the faculty and oversees delivery of courses.
  • Chairs the PA Progress and Promotions Committee, and with the recommendation of faculty, addresses academic, professional or other pertinent student issues.
  • Oversees the curricular mapping of the NCCPA Content and Task Area Blueprints, program competencies, program outcomes, program goals, and ARC-PA standards and assists in formulating appropriate curricular modifications as needed.
  • Oversees programmatic assessment and appropriate programmatic and curricular modifications.
  • Participates in teaching responsibilities relevant to area of expertise throughout the program.
  • Serves as course coordinator or co-coordinator of courses in the program as deemed appropriate.
  • Completes Course Assessment Forms and course assessment requirements and participates in assessment and evaluation of curriculum as assigned throughout the program.
  • Student Recruitment

  • Assists in the recruitment of students utilizing CASPA working with the Program Coordinator, Faculty and the PA Admissions Committee.
  • Participates and assists with the student interview, application, and selection process.
  • Reviews and approves all promotional material and develops appropriate strategy for enhancing the recruitment effort.
  • Provides Informational Sessions with the Office of Graduate Admissions to promote the PA program along with other ODU graduate programs.
  • Qualifications Required

  • The candidate must be a PA and a graduate of an accredited PA Program with master's degree or higher in a related discipline.
  • The candidate must possess at least three years of full-time higher education experience.
  • The candidate must hold a current or emeritus NCCPA certification as a PA and a current state license as a PA.
  • The candidate must possess exceptional communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • The candidate must possess a collaborative approach to education and clinical medicine.
  • The candidate must possess excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students, staff, faculty, health care professionals and the public.
  • The candidate should possess computer proficiency.
  • The candidate must possess sensitivity to the expectations of students, staff, faculty, health care professionals and the public.
  • The candidate must possess sensitivity to diversity and multi-cultural issues.
  • The candidate must demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team of highly motivated individuals.
  • The candidate must possess honesty, integrity, and commitment to maintaining high professional standards.
